Default Could a loose battery connection & starter button...

Hi all~
I originally thought that my DS was having problems because of HIGH elevation, But because of all the awesome feed back from this forum you have steered me straight....

here's what I found: 1.) the negative battery cable was quite loose on the battery post
2.) the starter button was quite loose on the handle bars & may have only been partailly grounded (brand new bars) I think the starter button needs to be scratched into the metal bars to ground.

Could these two findings have caused these types of symptoms???

Here were the symptoms from my previous posting:

"OK guys I just got done ripping a few laps in my parking lot on the DS... It ran hard and perfect for about 5-7 minutes lifting the wheels up off the ground ever time I got on the gas... Then out of no where it starts cutting in and out of power harshly, how do I describe it... like 5000 rpms to 0 rpms in a nano second, then 4000 rpms to 0 rpms, etc., etc.... All the while its bucking like a bronco. Then I had a new turn of events, the DS just shuts off and dies... No lights, no nutruel light, no red light, no matter what position the key is in. I turn the key off and on, off and on... nothing. Normally when the DS is off and the key is on you get the red and green light on, I get nothing will not even crank over."

After tightening the clamp on the starter button and tightening the negative battery cable to the post I have not had the problem back but have not run the DS extensively.

Could these two findings have caused these types of symptoms???

THANKS FOR ANY HELP OR THOUGHTS YOU CAN OFFER!

Bo

Hopefully that took care of your problem. If you find it comes back, then it's possible you may have a bad rectifier. If it continues, do a search on rectifiers. There is alot of good info on diagnosing, replacing, etc.

I think the starter button needs to be scratched into the metal bars to ground.
I hope you are referring to the kill switch otherwise you better carry plenty of fuses.

Yeah that all leads to the negative battery cable. I had a similar problem, but I was 45 miles away from home and my negative cable broke off. I ended having to be towed on a rope that was tied together and kept breaking. Basically, I ended up four feet from my tow quad and got shot with boulders the whole way, amazed I made it home. But in sumnation, yes it was probably your negative batter cable that caused all of your problems.

Yea those issues could be caused by the ground not connected properly. My issue was the ground cable FROM the battery AT the point where it attaches to the frame was loose and caused battertys to drain and not charge, wouldnt let the DS start..... major frustration till I found the problem. That totally ruined an entire dune trip last year.

Its almost always a simple thing ...

I sounds like everyone has had the negative terminal loosen up. Mine did the same thing, was cutting out under hard accelleration like it was running out of fuel. Tightened the cable and problem fixed. They don't tighten the ground properly from the factory on early 650's I assume?
