shim question?
#11
well, it wasnt in gear, i was sure hoping it was..lol...i spun the motor by hand and the piston goes all the way down and just before the exaust valves go down it binds up....i took the cams off and and pulled the buckets on the valve springs just to compare the shim on top of the springs. im missing the shim that goes on the left exaust side of the head. i dont know how that could of happend being that is the first time i have removed that bucket since the motor has been built...the other valve ( the one i thought i might of mixed up) shim wasnt laying in the slot . it was kinda cocked to the side not allowing the bucket to go all the way down...thats kinda what im hoping is binding the motor up..but i still cant get past where that shim is under my bucket..(dumb question coming) have u heard of anyone not running a shim in one of ther valves. i raised all my buckets to see and every one but the left exaust has one.( shim, im calling that little dime size do-dat that sits directly on the valve spring)

Well I really hope this isn't the cause, because if so it could be a bit pricey if you tried using to much force to turn the motor, but could the shim from that valve somehow fallen into the case?

i have been looking around with a light trying to see if i dropped it when i pulled the bucket off, but i havent seen it.im in the prosses of coming my shop...the only tim it really could of come out is when i was cleaning up my head surface on my work bench. i guess im going to have to open up my clutch cover just to be positive it isnt in there...

as far as i can see through clutch cover , the shim didnt fall inside of the motor..im not sure if it can fall into the spring....surely i havent been running this motor without a shim without noticing it.........i guess its time to get a feeler gauge and find out what size shim i need.....

Bigshow, I havent heard of anyone not running a shim, maybe somebody else has, but even if its a thin shim it should still be there. Also, even if the one shim was cocked in there, it shoud still open the valve. I wonder if the lost shim is down below causing you fits. Did you pull your clutch cover to see if it fell in there, might be between the chain and gear! WIsh you all the luck, Jed

jed, i pulled the clutch cover and moved the chain around and looked allaround with a flash light and couldnt find it.i dont know where else it could of fallen in the motor where it would be bound up...but i did see where insid the bucket where the shim has been riding against... so i know there was a shim in there at some time or another..lol..

Oh damn! The only other thing I could think of is to get a pen magnet and run it around down there, drain and check everything. If you cant find it it might be worth while to pull the engine and flip it over. If you have my luck, you would put it together and start it and it would come spitting out the side of the case. I still cant figure out why you cant rotate the engine fully.

thebigshow,
Now that you have the clutch cover off, it is no big deal to pull the timing chain. Pull the cams back out, pull the chain out and then see it the engine will rotate. This will eliminate the entire valve train. If it won't, the you have bigger problems.
