DS 650 Mods

Mohs87Warrior: You have your March 2000 issue already? What company is offering the carb & exhaust mods?
I just got back from an afternoon of riding. One thing I've noticed about the DS is that under high RPM (in it's power band) the torque and HP is so high, both the rear end and front end can try to "get away from you". It's almost as though there could be too much torque. Maybe different tires would help or softer dirt - I was riding on near "cement" dirt. I'm still getting used to the high RPMs that the 650 Rotax thrives on.

This is one option Ron Wood said he'll offer in 2 weeks...
------------------------------------------------------
Stage One - $ #,####.00
Essentially a "bolt-on" performance package without any internal engine modifications. 68% more torque at 3,700 rpm, 23% more at 7,000 rpm with a 25% boost in horsepower at 7,700 rpm, plus an extra thousand rpm over the stock setup.
- Carburetor kit - Mikuni TM45 carburetor, twist throttle, cable,
grips, manifold & K&N air filter (stock replacement
or race filter for use without air box)
- Complete exhaust
- Ignition management upgrade
------------------------------------------------------
Based on my calculations, that should be around 60HP@7700RPM and a 10MPH increase in top speed due to 8700RPM.

I saw the new article in the March issue of 4WA on the phase one DS 650. BOY, talk about an increase in low end! There was at least a 7-10 horsepower difference all the way across the low end. I can't say much about the top end though, it seemed to be pretty close to stock (42 hp @ the rear wheels).
This brings up an interesting point, How does the DS 650, with 42 rear wheel horsepower, beat the lighter (by about 100lbs) Banshee, supposedly with 39 rear wheel horsepower? Something tells me that the Banshees aren't quite doing the much claimed 39 horses at the rear wheels. Just a thought.

Mike Chero: I haven't yet read the 4-wheel ATV Action article, but 42 HP at the rear wheels sounds a little low for the Bombardier DS650. I don't know what the torque curve for a stock banshee is, but it could be that the DS650 has more usable torque which results in an acceleration advantage over a stock banshee. Just speculation though. Of course top speed is really only a matter of gear ratios and maximum attainable RPM. In the Dirt Wheels article on the Full Race 250R vs. modified TRX600 vs. stock DS650, if you read between the lines a bit, you can come to the conclusion that the DS650 probably had the best acceleration in the straights/hills due to it's high torque. The DS650 does have much lower torque at low RPM. I plan to add a pipe to resolve that issue.
