Roost,

If you aren't big on the carburetors, why not go with the EFI? The latest version is a sweet setup.

For the EFI what is the price on the set up and would it deliver the power gains that the carbs do?

EFI will always be a step above a carb because it is at peak (or DAMN near it) A/F ratio at ALL times (constantly self adjusting) I dont think the gain is that much of a properly tuned 46 (key words...properly tuned, many of us including myself are not tuning junkies quite yet, and are probably pretty far off from peak HP) but the gain is probably in the 2-3 hp range (over a 46)

I do wish I could go efi, but until that price comes down, I just cant get myself to do it. Yes I do have a LOT of money in carbs right now, but I bought both trying to find which I like more, and one or the other will be sold once I pick one.

KMS- EFI

I wish I had the cash, OR the know-how to just do a gsxr750 conversion (what I REALLY want) but until I get the fab/welding skills, or find a money tree, thats not really an option.

Default Bombardier's fatal flaw???----interesting UPDATE

I have a 2004 DS Baja X. It is a #7995 and was manufactured on 04/28/2004. I weigh 300 lbs and ride the quad somewhat hard. So far I have not had any problems. I did notice some oil at the blow by hose. I wiped it off and have not seen any since. Do you guys think Im ok as my bike was maufactured in 04? Thanks, D

If you arent having allot of oil constantly comming out of the crankcase breather and getting a mess over everything it could be fine. What i noticed was about 4 months before my engine went maybe 5 i was screaming across a frozen lake and i seen a little puff of smoke out of my breather....never thought much of it at the time since i never seen it again. You could do a compression test even tho we are not sure that they will tell you anything diff since the compression is still usually good with the top ring gone in this case. Even my new rebuilt engine still has a tiny bit of oil come out of the crankcase breather....but not close to as much before. Im not sure there is any really way to tell if the top ring is broke rather than taking it down and looking inside for yourself.

Rings have mass and are designed around rpm range.
If you exceed this range the ring will not contain cylinder pressure
and thus pressure gets on both sides of ring.
This results in very high harmonic frequences that will shatter the ring
into many peices.
I brought this up because I noticed you run a RW cdi.
If your jetting is not on or alittle rich, then at high rpm's you could of
had alittle preignition issues that may of shocked the ring also.

What does your spark plugs look like?

damn you have a lot of info oldmanracing! what you say makes perfect sense. The original motor with the shattered rings was completely stock, my motor with the rwr cdi was never overreved that I know of, the jetting aspect of being rich is very possible. Currently I am experiencing a lot of communication out of my crankcase breather tube, that is pessure and vaccuum, as well as an excess amount of oil coming out. I am pretty sure an overly large ring endgap to be the cause of this, and I'm soon to find out....lol.

Another one, and again its from Alberta. I work at a bombardier dealership (Mellott's RV) and seeing stuff like this really scares me. A DS rode hard, but well taken care off. The rings just blew apart for no aparent reason. I know the owner of this machine and I don't think he ever just started it and took off with out letting it warm up, which the piston looks like a four corner seize (like you usally see on a two stroke sled motor) but the rings usally seize or mend into their groves, they don't just blow apart like this. Lucky this was caught in time and the cylinder was saved, but the head has a couple of deep pits and a piece of ring stuck to it. And the valves were on the little on the tight side. Thechosenone or Dunerider650 do you guys remeber what the valves were like on the other bikes? Not that the valves caused it just looking for a similarity. And do you have any pictures of the pistons from theres bikes?

Here some info on the bike
From boyle Alberta

I did not take mine apart so i did not get the chance to see what it all looked like..... but the engine builder did say my head was bashed up but reusable and my jug was wrecked...but he never said the valves were out.
