Default Newb DS question

Hey I was reading up on another thread that the DS was originally ment to do 85mph, but they geared it down to the reagulations to 75mph. What is the stock size of the DS sprockets? and what would you change em to, to make it do 85. Thanks a lot

First off, why do you want to go that fast? Where I ride I rarely get to keep it open long enough to safely maintain anything near top speed. If you really want to gear up you can either go UP on the front sprocket (stock size is 16) or go DOWN on the rear sprocket (stock size is 40). the front sprocket is cheaper and easier to change than the rear. I would reccomend trying a 17 tooth (can get them from www.rockymountainatv.com for around 15 bucks) and see if that gets you to where you want to be.

Alright thanks. I was just wonderin what the sizes were n stuff. I doubt i would go that fast anyway but there are a lot of logging roads that I could go pretty fast on. How would it hold up to a banshee, like moderately modded? Thanks again

i got lots of logging roads to... and i use my 80mph top speed everytime i go out riding many many times.....stock the ds650 would not pull 85mph u would sit at about 7 thousand rpms and not go any higher even on a long stretch.....i had 22 inch tires and stock gearing so thats about a 17 tooth sprocket on the front and i couldnt pull my rev limiter with a huge wind behind me on a highway. The banshee...well if its just pipes depending where u race you should get him i would think

You guys are lucky to have logging roads... I rarely get to stay above 40-50 for more than a few seconds (except in the dunes, which we only hit a couple times a year)

Im talking small town of 14,000 people running up and down the outskirt roads around town. Its nice dialing them in on the asphalt instead of that big dust cloud you get dusted with every time to stop to make an adjustment.

If you run a 17 in the front and a 38 in the rear you can run 102 mph........but why?

The DS was designed for open desert racing where running 85 mph could be considered mildly slow. For example in the Baja 1000 you need to average 55-60 mph the entire 1000 miles. If you anything about averaging speeds you'll know that that is a really fast average.

So, will a DS650 with an exhaust end cap and a K&N filter pull 17/38 gearing? I'm setting up a DS for endurance ice racing and there are numerous long straight aways that would allow me to run full out. I want to be able to blow by trx's and yzf's on the straights
