Fan mounting ?
#1
My fan in the 01 DS just took a dump. I did a search and found the replacement fan at Offroad Warehouse as suggested. In the search I read that part of the problem with the 00 and 01 fan is the way it is mounted and that later models used a different system to mount the fan. What are your suggestions? Just use some rubber washers to absorb some of the vibration? Or is there a better way? I would rather take the time and do it right once than a couple of times wrong. I have the same model, I'm on my third fan now! When you take your fan off, there are little metal shims at each mounting piont. BE SURE YOU KEEP THEM! You will need them to put back on with the new fan. I found the easiest way is to remove the head pipes. Loosen all 4 nuts, remove the shims (not how many are in in each spot) and then remove the fan.
When you re-install the new fan, try to put the shims back right where they came out. Be sure to spin the fan by hand and make sure it does not rub the shroud. Snug the nuts down and re-spin the fan to be sure it still does't rub.
You can short the wires togather on the coolant temp switch to test the fan.
Another thing, when instaling the fan, make SURE that it does not touch the radiator. It will rub a hole in it and the core will leak! I've seen two of them with this problem already, and no, one of them was not mine....thank God

You can weld brackets like the new ones are but, that's a pain.
One of my buddies and I both found we were missing a couple bolts on our mounts. . . kinda laughted at it thinking that may have been why our fans were still lasting. If you can fit some rubber vibration isolation I think you'll be money ahead.

Thanks for the info. From what you are saying the new DS relocated the mounting brackets. I might give that a try. Also glad to know it is easyer to remove the header. I would have been fighting the fan for no telling how long then ended up removing the header anyway. At least now I will go ahead and get it out of the way and save myself some time.

I have a 2000 and I am on my 5th fan. I went threw 4 of them in the first 2 years, but have had the same one in the bike for the last 2 years now with no problems.
It took me some time but the way I have it mounted you will never have any problems again. I ordered the brackets from a new model, these bracket clip into the fan and allow it to be flat mounted. I removed the rad and installed a flat piece of metal across the top of the 2 frame supports. I then installed 2 short pieces of flat metal to on the lower part of the supports. Installed the flat metal with new bolts and lock nuts. Then mounted the fan the same way with 1/4" bolts and lock nuts.
My bike has been this wayfor the last 2 or 3 years - no problems and the fan still works fine
Sorry I don't have any pictures !!!

Does any one have any pictures of the fix that MRDS650 did, or something like it. A picture for me is worth a thousand words. Thanks
