But I will let you all know what happens after the dyno runs. Thanks for any help.
I am pretty sure that OMR's jet suggestions (OMR correct me if I am wrong here) are based on the dyno jet kit. The Mikuni jets and the Dyno Jet's are different... ie a 180 Mikuni is not the same as a 180 DynoJet. Make sure you are using the correct ones. Also you said you were going to order a jet... I think you just need to buy the entire kit with Dyno Jet.

OMR,
Now I'm really confused & frustrated. I installed the 190 DJ & had the DJ needle on the 4th notch. I rode it & it felt like it did when I had my 180DJ in when my float was set to the 13/32 hinged & 11/32 unhinged setting. I also made my pilot screw 4.5 out. The bottom feels just OK, the mid feels strong & then it falls off again. It falls off in low gears too. (maybe even more so then top...) I'm pretty sure it's not from overreving. (I have no tach). Anyway I changed my needle to 3rd notch. (no good down on power). Moved it back to fourth notch & tried a 185 DJ. No good, it made less midrange pull & it down on power on top but felt consistent. I put it away out of frustration then. I certainly can't imagine I need to run a 195 DJ! That's seems way to large don't you think?

Early this year when my carb was still mostly stock before these mods I wrote to HMF & told them I was running a Mikuni 170 main & the stock needle on the 5th notch. It was very crisp, but my top end seemed weak. (but it did not fall off so fast) I could beat 450Rs & stock DS's 1-3 gear but in 4th & 5th I'd get caught. By stock DSs! They suggested the needle be moved to the 4th notch saying I was too rich. I never ran it like that because I ended up reading this thread & going this route. What do you think of their advice? Should I try a stock needle & main or stay with DJ & try to get this thing 100% powerful & consistent?

I guess I'm so far from stock & have tried so many things I'm ready to give up. Can you advise further?
Thanks

I dont have a scanner so I cant post my dyno results yet. But it did better than I though it would do.my last run it got max power of 40.9hp and 39.4 ftlbs torque at about 6500rpm. but it gets really really lean on the very top. as soon as I can post the graphs I will.

skidoofan,

Just got back from up north visiting my son.
The washer you have missing is 1mm thick, that is equivelant to being off 1 groove on the needle. For the dyno run you should of been in the 5th groove to makeup for the missing washer. If you repalce the washer and grind a flat spot to sit flat on the bottom, the 4th groove will be fine. It will richen the mid alittle and a touch to top. The factory needle has a very aggressive taper and overlaps the top alittle. Leave the 180 in and check your plug for color after you have some time on it.

Glad its coming together for you.

We tried moving the clip to the 5th notch and it got pig rich wouldnt even pull itself in fourth gear. So I moved it back to the 4th notch. So If I were to install tha washer back in there do you think that would take care of the hesitating problem when you get on the throttle. And what about the lean spot on top end very lean. As soon as I can get the graphs posted I will. Thanks again for any help.

01ds650,

What color is your spark plug?
If porcelain is clear white with end of plug light grey,
put in the 195DJ.

Remember, you have a very aggressive ignition cdi and you have to do what the plug is telling you.

skidoofan,

You are experiencing the same problem we all had in the beginning. The factory spring was too stiff on the early models and would not let the slide rise all the way to the top.
Your motor is running lean at top because the slide can not rise all the way.
Order the new spring and that should help. What length is your present spring?

01ds650,

What mods have you done to your carb, something could be missing?

OMR
Time for this oldman to go to bed.

OMR, I've done all mods to my carb except the filter on it & the cap on the snorkle hose. I've been waiting trying to get the jetting right first before I go messing with other stuff. I never really use my plugs on the DS to check jetting. It seems like it takes forever for them to show anything.

My spring I think is an 04 spring that I cut to the length you spec'd. I have another spring that is my 01 & is shorter. (only like 2.9inches long) I thought about trying that just to see what happens. The DJ 190 & DJ needle in 4th notch ran best yesterday (I've not tried Mikuni parts). I went down in jetting & it lost some power, so I thought I'd go up but 195 seems huge. I've never been that big before. If the top ran like the mid at 190 I would have been super happy. That falling off really bothers me. More tinkering this week I guess.
