Stock Carb Mods
#151
How are you guys liking your modded carbs? how is its power after? i keep considering doing these mods but since a new carb slide is 60 bucks from my dealer (Canadian) i am a little hesitant. I like my top end and mainly use my top speed most of the time...do these mods gain or loose power there or does it stay the same?

01ds650,
Your size selection is good.
The shims are 29mm and can be bought at a Yamaha or BMW dealer for under $5 each.
I have a local dealer that will trade old for new for $5 a set.
Good Luck,
OMR

I got the DS torn apart pretty quick. Then I took lunch. By the time I called around, found shims, drove there & back 3.5 hours went by!!!!
Anyway got it back together. The one exhaust that was .007 I put a shim in I thought would get it to .005, but it made it tighter than .004. So I took it apart again & put the 2.45 back in & removed the 2.50. I then rotated the motor one turn by hand & remeasured. One intake was .005, the other three were .006. The .006 would slide under but barely & the .007 tab was too much for all of them. I was pretty happy with that. I reassembled & prayed my timing would be right. I just tighten down my gas tank & seat & started it. Fingers crossed..... it died. Damn I thought. Hit it again & purred perfect. Let it run 5 min & checked the oil. I lost some but it didn't seem to matter quanity wise. Then I just rode around my yard (in town). The HMF was way loud between the house. But my quad ran smooth & jumped around in 1st & 2nd when poked. Whether or not it's better than before I don't know I haven't rode enough, but it at least seems timed & buttoned up right, that makes me feel relaxed
OMR, thanks for the tip. At .002 it needed done.

OMR, I didn't have the bolt to lock the crank for TDC so I made one. It went in pretty easy but my threads weren't perfect & when I took it out I noticed shavings on it. I'm guessing from the motor threads. I reinstalled the stock plug fine with no leaks, so I'm guessing the threads are fine. They felt fine. I bought oil & filter to change it out but I did run it for awhile. Ever see that happen & how serious is it. The more I thought about it today the more it bothered me. Hence the oil purchase... I hope I'm overreacting.

OMR,
I just don't get it. I got the DS all setup with new valve shims & spec'd right & still the same crap. It runs reliable. It just has no punch at the high end of the midrange or top end. I just don't get it. 1st & 2nd gear are the worst. no explosion at all. It's very frustrating right now.
Do RWR CDI boxes ever go bad? I just don't know what else to try.

Stock from point is small ,clip.white, fat
Omr suggests making the fat in a D shape in putting that on bottom.
It aligns the needle with the jet.Youll get even fuel flow. And less drag
from the needle on the jet.
