01ds650,

Just for information, the 195DJ is between a 182.5 and 185 mikuni.
It may be the largest you have run, but not unrealistic.
Do not change springs at this time, going too short will cause new problems.

Turn out your pilot screw to 5 1/2 turns.

Wish you had a tach, the ds cam falls off fast after 8k rpm's. Pulls past 8 in lower gears, but in 5th gear just creeps up.

When was the last time you checked your valve clearances?

Don't become discouraged, were all here to help.

my valves were checked in 04. I found two (exhaust) too tight & had the dealership change them. It ran about the same after that. Maybe I should check them again but I don't ride often & I know I haven't put 100 hours on it since they were changed.

I went out tonight & tried a 195 DJ. It ran about like the 190 did. I checked my outside plug & it looked about perfect on the tip but the top ring was black. But it's been in there all spring & through all my jetting tests. So I put a new outside plug in & checked it after a brisk ride & it looked kinda white on the tip but not bad on the ring. Then again I didn't ride long. . So then I went to a 200DJ & put another plug in. It ran about the same too. The plug looked the same. I moved the needle to the 3rd notch but it dropped some power. Moved the needle back to the 4th notch & for "fun" I installed a 175DJ. I gotta admit it's the lowest jet I've run since all this tinkering but it seemed to run good. Not great, but good. Bottom was Ok, mid was strong & the top didn't drop off but kind of just faded out. But better than before. So then I put in a 170 Mikuni jet. It ran about the same as the 175DJ. The 175 DJ might have even been a tad better.... maybe. So of course I'm now more confused than ever. But a 200DJ just doesn't seem right. But a 175 DJ is smaller than a stock 165 Mikuni. HMF said they did not use a K&N filter but when they tuned their DS with the Sport series pipe (which I have) they only used 165 Mikuni! That seems weird.

I don't want to run it lean. But that old saying "lean is mean" seems to be holding true. I remember one time like 4 years ago I kept jetting up & got to like a 200DJ. It ran good around where I rode briskly but on my first trip to the woods it sucked after 30 minutes & I had to jet back down. I really need to go for a ride for more than short bursts I guess. Maybe I'll put the 165 Mikuni in & see what happens. I've never had this kind of trouble jetting.

Another thing.

My DS seems to fall off the top end more in 1st & 2nd than in say 4th & 5th. Sometimes it just feels like it poops out in the lower gears at high rpms.

Also, as far as DJ vs Mikuni jets. I know the flow is rated different but other than that is there a difference? I mean do either one have different characteristics like the needles do? I'm still using the DJ needle BTW.

Video Valve Adjustment

I still feel that your intakes are too tight.

Please check them with a feeler gaage.

The jets do not have different characteristics other than the numbering. Only the needles have different tappers.

Fatholley, that's what I thought. But one thread I saw on the web said don't mix & match Mikuni & DJ parts. It didn't say why though. I just figured if the jets only difference is flow rating why would it matter.

BTW, OMR great vid. I might check mine again. Funny that vid is what happened to mine last time intake were fine, exhaust were tight.

Thanks

01ds, I am running mis matched needle and main jet. I have what was called an Alba needle... I think its just a Dyno Jet needle, they said it had stronger low and mid.... and Mikuni Main jet. The main reason I did not just buy the Dyno Jet kit is that the mains that the kit comes with do not go high enough for me. I run a Mikuni 200 main with no airbox and ported intake. The jets in the Dyno Jet kit go up to 205 but that is only something like a 195 in Mikuni. I am maxed out on the stock carb so I looking at other options at this point. 200 is the biggest small round main jet Mikuni makes so any more mods and I have no where to go on the stock carb. Good luck... OMR will get you going.

Small Round Main Jets

They do make main jets larger than 200 for mikuni.

OMR,
checking my valves right. My left front exhaust is fine, my right front exhaust is maxed @ .006. The .006 will slide under but a .007 will not. So I'll call those good.
My left rear intake is fine @ .004 will fit but barely, my left side rear intake though will only allow a .002 to slide under. the .025 was tight & the .003 a no go. So it looks like you were right on that account. Now I need to try & figure out what shim I need!

My old shim measures 2175 so say 217, my clearance was .002. Anyone know what shim I should buy?

I had little screws on my calipers too tight. loosened them & checked again. My vlave that will only accept a .002 feeler is a 2.35 shim. So I should get a 2.25 shim right? The left side was kinda tight. It was a 2.30 shim. I thought about getting a 2nd 2.25 shim & try & get both valves to .006

any advice?
