520 vs. 530 chain
#1
Well I think its finally time to replace my factory chain, only has 3 years on it! While I replace it I am also going to replace my sprockets. So since I have to buy everything, I have the option of converting to the 520 size to shed a few pounds off of the beast.
I am not a drag racer, mainly dune and trail ride. I figure my 730 is somewhere in the 60-70hp range. Is the 520 right for me? I don't want to try and save a few pounds only to have the chain snap on me out in the middle of desert. Will the 520 wear noticeable faster? I rather not replace the rear sprocket every 3 rides if I don't have to. Either way I go 520 or 530 it has to be an O-ring chain.
Any suggestions on 520 vs. 530?
Any suggestion of brands/models of chains?

I've switched but haven't put any time on it yet. So can't give you any feedback.
Contact the Bom. he can give you the info you want.
He's running the 520 set up on his 100+ hp DS and says it's holding up fine.

I know this is an older thread, but on the 520 chain how much less longevity do you get from a non O ring chain vs an O ring chain on a dunner? Or just for safty and logevity just go with a O ringed chain?

Finally pulled the trigger and ordered mine the other day. . . man, I'm gonna have a few 530 sprockets to post in the Garage Thread!
I'm still on the stock original chain so, I'm due for this change for sure. . .
About ready to pull the engine out and have the builder change the valve springs and then degree the cams. . . after that I think I'll get her to the dyno for some tuning. . . it's time. . . I'm probably giving up a few pony's due to improper jetting.
So, how many lengths will this gain me. . . my luck. . . probably slower after all this!
Oh well. . . she's a duner anyways. . .

I recently made the change over to a 520 and have no complaints. The same hills at Sand Mtn that I was pulling 15/42 gearing with the 530, I am now pulling with 15/40 at about the same RPM in 3rd gear. Nice little pickup not to mention you loose all that low speed chain noise produced by that big ol 530.
