the stock carb is 42mm, if you change to a larger carb like the 45's and 48's so many of us run, you absolutely must port the intake to match, otherwise the larger carb is moot.
far as stock carb goes, a ported intake is debatable, but its a must with a larger carb.

yeah for max topend power at the expense of velocity and throttle response. If someone is gonna run a big carb, chnces are they are going after topend so they may as well port the intake.Im ol skool i only port things when they are going to be beneficial to what im trying to do.I dont just "hog" things out cuz i think there are gains.Im all about maintaining velocity which helps volumetric effeciency and throttle response than all out flow.

blah blah blah..you sound boring--but thats your choice---it was for fun...i just put my ds back together last night..i did omr modded carb, big gun cdi,air box mods,k&n filter, endcap and ported intake...OVER ALL---seams more snappy and definetely pulls longer and harder..so it was worth the extra 50$ to get it done to me..why not have any extra you can

Glad that you're happy with it and that's all that matters. And it gives you options for later down the road.
Which end cap did you end up with? That HPR one really lets it flow.

Yep, I've still got one of them. Don't use it but it's in the garage for a rainy day sellathon!

I can understand where you are coming from, but I use the mikuni tm 45 for bottom mid and top and have plenty of dyno tuning time as well as saddle time to prove its worth over the entirety of the curve. I'm sure you can dig that you have to match up all components to work together, and with the correct combination of piston, cams, carb and porting the best of all worlds can be achieved. there are plenty of bikes out there running ported intakes and bigger carbs with not much to show for it, but that doesn't mean all of us are suffering from the same.

On a side note, I would also add like I always have in the past, that accellerator pumps rock my woods filled world for log and rut hopping and nothing yanks the heavy front of a DS skyward like a good pumper carb. But sorry, this is a porting post, don't mean to run off on a tangent..
