street legal?

Yes it has been done, but in the US there are not many states that allow it. I think there are only a few actually (arizona and south dakota come to mind).
I have always wanted to make mine street legal but my state is pretty lame about everything- quads included.

I have never converted a quad but have done a few sandrails. Every state has their own laws that relate what is required for a moterized vehicle to meet regulations. That being said I only belive that a couple of states up north allow quads to be street legal though in Europe it is not uncommon. You have to have turn signals , stop and head lights, side veiw mirror, tires that meet Dot standards and a few more things I can't think of right now. On my rails I had to have tire flaps and wipers and also a horn. Don't think that applies to you , but maybe the horn. Good luck, you can always call your DMV and get the info you need.

If you cant find the info on your states DMV site (which more than likely you cant, no such thing as "easy" with the dmv ) just give them a call and ask.
I think it is pretty ridiculous you cant make quads legal in more states. I know I would rather be on a quad than a bike in 90% of cases. I personally will NOT ride bikes as I know too many people that have gotten messed up on them (a few their own stupid stunts, most accidents were because another motorist wasnt paying attention).

Does any one know what the reason is that you can ride a motorcycle on the road but not a quad? I ride street bikes and I feel that at speeds of 55mph and under a quad can be as safe as a motorcyle. Now at faster speeds there is no way I want to be on the highway on a quad with that short wheel base trying to carve a canyon or make a fast defensive move. Give me the motorcycle every time, but I still would love to hop on the DS to go to the store or ride around the neighborhood. Just my 2cents.

I dont know for a fact, but im willing to bet a good bit of money it is because all quads are straight axle designs. I am sure everyone understands what I am getting at, and if you dont have you ever ridden your quad on asphalt and tried to make a sharp turn? You either go up on two tires or the front end pushes and you make a much wider turn.
I am wondering if someone were to fabricate a diff for the rear end (would have to be easy to swap out rear ends, as I sure know I dont want one tire fire on my ds!). My buddy and I have consider putting a bearing inside one wheel/hub so that only one tire is getting power (not the most functional way, but it seems to be the easiest).
I noticed on biker build off (discovery channel) the british guy built a trike, and built a diff for it. If someone wants to start fabricating diffs or find existing diffs and fabbing up some mounts I'll take two! I would enjoy nothing more than being able to zip around town on my quad. The only thing I would worry about would be theft and vandalism. I live in a college town and it would be easier on the pocket book to ride the quad too. I too agree I would not want to be on one on the highway, but for up to 55mph I dont see what the problem is! I know for a fact quads would pass all of the DOT functions as well (braking/turning etc etc) and I seriously doubt a quad could be more dangerous to be on than a bike or scooter!
