Default DS650 CDI worries

I just bought an 04..the guy i bought it from said it had a rev box in it to increase the rev limit 1000 rpms...ok...well i was reading some horror stories on here about the procom CDI and i decided to go give mine a look.....it doesnt say procom on it, but it does read PE - C - B650, I saw a procom on ebay and it had similar markings, I want to make sure im not running one, If it is a procom...what brand should i get to replace it

Thanks
Seth

Im one of the guys that had a procom cdi that destroyed my spag clutch. The markings you are describing are in fact on the procom CDI. You can tell if when you start the quad up it does not always start the first time. It will pop or backfire. It seemed to do this more when the bike is warmed up. You will feel it pop under the seat where the airbox is located. Every time it pops or back fires its forcing your motor to go in reverse causing you sprag clutch to go in the opposite direction. This will end up wiping your sprag clucth out and in my case bending teeth on the starting gears. If it pops or back fires get the thing out right away.

I myself went to a ron woods CDI and have not had any problems. The Quad runs great. The only bad thing is it has no rev limiter at all. So you have to watch if you let others ride your Quad as the will rev the thing over the limit. I also installed a tether kill switch just incase I have to bail climbing a big sand hill. A lot of guys are going with the Vortex. I have heard many good things about it. They are expensive though. The Ron woods CDI is I think about $350.00 if you buy it from them. I got mine from a guy on this site under the the whats in my garage post for $100.00. I also just this morning saw one on ebay. The bid was up to $125.00. Hope this helps. Good luck, D

We were lucky all it caused us that 3 Batteries and 1 rectifier but still get rid of it. We go a Vortex and I think we paid just over 360 for it brand new through Go Parts Direct of course plus tax and shipping you have to get a quote from them to get that price. It has rev settings you can change it to and does have a rev limit so it is better for that reason alone then you don't have to worry about anyone killing your bike.
Definately get rid of the procom. They suck.
I hope this helps you also.

I heard rumor that procom makes CDI units for big gun. Some dont have problems with big gun but I myself would not take the chance. Later,D

I have not heard of anybody thats had a problem with timing on the Big Gun unit. A few of thier early models did have failures, but that was two years ago. They are indeed a PROCOMM E-Prom, but the ignition timing is different, which is where the problem was with the Procomm. my 2 cents - Ondunes.com has them along with two other brands.

Has anyone had good luck with a Procom? Are the new ones any better?

I have had my DS for about 6 mo, and when I got it the last owner had just gotten an Alba CDI, which was just a Procom. He put it the week before I picked up the DS.

My DS starts great everytime, has never kicked back, and when I do something stupid, like stall, it does not kick back either. I have my idle set between 1450 and 1500 RPM.

Even though I've had great luck with mine, it seems like it is luck that I have not had any problems. I'm a little nervous running it and I'm thinking about putting the stock one back on until I can get a better CDI.

Does anyone have a timing curve of the various CDIs available for the DS?

Thanks,
Scott
