What have we created???
I JUST rolled in and emptied the toy box. Coral Pink Utah was a little hot this year, probably about 10 degrees hotter than normal for this time of the year.
Setting the stage...
As you all know, I recently got the HPR730 running again and this was to be the first time out of the shoot for the monster. I had felt the monster before - but only for twenty minutes. Then CABLOOEY!!!!
The Kentucky boys got me back up and running and I really had no idea what to expect. With the full race head, Randall at HPR thought it would be best to go with the HPR4 cams instead of the HPR3 cams. The previous thought was that what I would gain on the top with HPR4's I'd lose on the bottom because of my size. The new race head on, we thought the 4's might be a better choice and that the entire package would work well with just a little loss on the bottom if any. Also new to this build is the Proto-type HPR in-frame drag pipe mated to the stock Bombardier header.
The contestants...
For the last three years I had been racing the same banshees, DS's and the same raptors with some success. The pilots were always smaller than me by a minimum of 125lbs but I ALWAYS held my own. The last few years the Stage 2.5 (my sled prior to the HPR motors) with off the shelf cams did well but much better with others running the throttle. With me in the saddle, I would usually get beat by about 2 - 4 lengths at Coral Pink, and only at the end of the run. The bashees were piped, filtered and somewhat modified. The raptors were always piped, jetted, filtered, geared, cam'd, pistoned etc. etc. One of the Shees in particular had the cool head, higher compression pistons, lightened, piped and carbed. He usually beat me from about mid-hill and accelerated to about 6-8 lengths for the win. This years races were going to be good.
Prep......
I did absolutely NO tuning from the 20 minute motor, and simply bolted the HV48 on. I did get a quick consultation from Kentucky before the trip just to get an idea where others had gone before. I dropped the fixed powerjet to a 75 from a 120, and went unchannged on the adjustable powerjet at 1 full turn out. Had the nitrous ready to go as well, but didn't get to do anything with it - I'll explain later.
The stage was set and the less modded banshee went up against a well worked Z440 and beat it by about 3 - 4 lenghts. That same shee rolled through the finish line for a tie against a stage 2.5 DS. Against the more modded shee, she it lost by about 3 lenths and then they pointed in my direction with a kind of erogance about them. Guess they figured I was all show and no go, and that BIGDaddy's size would still be a problem for me.
I knew what was going to happen before I even got to the line. I had raced the worked Z440 earlier. We had about 15 people lined up watching the race and wondering as well, what would happen. Props going out to Paul and Larry for running the starts and calling the races for us - thanks guys.
When the bike was down for the count, I also went to the 520 conversion on the chain set with the new Ti-molly sprockets from Sidewinder. Also moved up to the 25in Triple Buffs w/lightweight honda rims in back along with triple buffs on the front. Topping the bike off was a new swing arm from ODP.... These guys had no idea what they were getting into
At the start, I launched in 2nd (for the first race), and left at about 7K. Within the first 15 feet, I had a bike length and never looked back. When I started to run out of track, I let off the throttle and looked back. The closest bike was about 12 - 15 lenghts back and it was one of the banshees. It was the modded shee, that until then, was the fastest on the dunes this weekend. Wanted another go at it so I lined up with the shees again and this time the 700 raptor wanted in on the fun. Remember that all the riders were at the very least 100lbs lighter (I've lost 28lbs in 5 weeks - Thank you very much!) riding much lighter quads. The raptor was a 700 with fuel injection, piped, mapping box and filtered. This time I decided to leave in first instead of second. If you've been to Coral Pink UT, you know that the sand is thicker than thick. It's hard to walk in it, let alone race in it. The first gear lauch at 8K LEAPED the bike out of the sand and within the same 15ft I had almost 2 bike lenghts. It does require a very quick gear change to second, but it was well worth it. By mid track, the Raptor had pulled off and the first banshee was done. The faster of the two bashees tried to stick it out, but by the end of the track, I had time to turn around and shut the bike down before he got to the line. Most will think this is a tall tale.... Believe it, it happened.
Most simply shook their head and went back to racing each other and all I could do was look on. They wanted no more and realized that it was over before it started. I didn't even get to run the NOS. No reason to, and being so hot out there, it was probably just as well.
Back at camp there was a very shakey video taken from a digital camera that showed the last race against the shees and the raptor. The video shows me half track with a rooster tail about 8ft hight and about 30- 40ft long. If I can get the video of that race I'll get BOMBER to post it on his site.
If Paul or Larry look in, they can give you a spectators account. They do more lurking than anything else, but at least you guys would have another description.
In the end, we are calling it about a 18 - 20 lenght increase. This all happened without anytuning on the bike. Kind of plug and play.... if you will. The next day, I went out and did some tuning. Believe it or not, I never got the bike over 8500 rpms during the race. During tuning the next day, the adjustable powerjet came back a full half turn leaner. This made the HPR 730 even more shocking. I got the bike to 9200 rpms and it never missed a beat. The 700 raptor was over heating (later we found that the fan was working exactly like it should), the shees had given up completely and didn't even want to race the stage 2.5 DS anymore. The owner of the modded shee, is now looking for me to build him an HPR 730 after he picks up a used bike.
What a weekend. I never did turn on the BoonDocker system, but I'm sure it will work as advertised as it did before. I'm going to tear down again this week and measure shim distance to be safe. This is a monster and I wish each of you could feel the power. As for HPR - NUFF SAID. BETTER GO GET YOU SOME>

YAHOOOOOOO BIG D!!!!! Man do you deserve it, after what you went through!!
For all of the naysayers out there about these heads, proofs in the pudding. They may cost more, but you get what you pay for.
I can only imagine what having that added torque from the 730 does for your bike. Man, isnt it funny how you dont notice yourself going so fast, then you look back to find everyone so far back, then look forward and realize, HOLY CRAP........BBBBRRRRAAAAAAKKKKKKEEEESSSSSSS!!!!!! LOL
Congrats my man!!

I would have never guess what kind of power this thing would end up with. Bomber told me on the phone that it was going to be nasty, and obviously he knows.... Just never knew it would be this nasty. It actually makes you ride a little different. You have to be very careful where and when you blip the throttle when you are duning. Has the manners of a Monk but when you grab a thumb full.... Good grief.
HT. As far as the in-frame goes. We were using this dune trip as R&D for the duning practicality. I haven't found so much as a pimple on it from hitting any part of the swing arm. I will warn you though, this pipe aint for the weak at heart. It's LOUD, very LOUD. For those that have noise restrictions, forget about it. You won't even come close. As for those who don't, I would suggest that you always were a helmet. It's actually too loud for enjoyment in the sand. But boy, are the up-sides nice. This thing rocks! Can't imagine the ugly stick hanging out..... this is the answer. Just about as much power but no FULL DRAG dress. You'll never know that the pipe is there (physically that is). I'll see if I can get a pic approved from HPR and then post on my photo page. You'll get to see the new look. Hope you like. Give me until Tuesday or Wednesday. HPR is closed on Monday, and I'm coming back from a long weekend.
I GOT ME SOME...... Where's yours?

Sounds good BigDaddy!
Cool to see the stock header in use, I still run a slip-on pipe (HMF) and had my stock header ceraimc coated and the bike does great, but a race pipe is what she is needing (for some occasions), and I'll never go back to a non-stainless header!

I'm sure that I'll be in the 70's without the NOS. Dyno's out here in vegas are getting hard to come by. I'll probably be getting to the dyno sometime in early fall. Right now in Vegas we're in the mid-triple digits. I think today is supposed to be 111 in the shade.
I'll have it dyno'd before DS Days and pics will be up within the next two days (I hope).
