damn snap ring

The best way is to buy the proper pair of snap ring pliers. They arent normal size. I had to order them. But if you have a friend around theres another way. Get a normal pair of snap ring pliers and open the ring up as much as possible. Get your buddy to fit a small flat head screw driver in the part that opens up and work the ring off. It can be done this way, but not the easiest.

it's all in the tool. I have a set of snap on heavy duty snap ring pliers. They are big but were made for the exact ring that you are working on. They ratchet and everything. Makes the job very simple.
Using a screw driver will work just be careful not to damage the grove that the ring is in, and don't bend the ring. Those are the two must common abuses of the snap ring removal.
Good Luck.

I got a pair of snap ring pliers from sears and they seemed to work fine once you get the rind spread gently push the ring out of the groove and it will come of pretty easily. If you're going to take apart you're whole rear make sure the bearings are repacked and make sure everything is tight and good to go especially the nut that turns on the axle. And when putting the snap ring back on just spread it as far as possible and try and get atleast one side to sit right and then push the rest on.

with the right tool, the snap ring is not even big enough to use the entire spread of the tool. Go to NAPA and get their large snap ring kit. It's about $75 but you'll always have it and it's the same as my snap on. Don't want to tell you how much the snap on lable cost me.....
