Default pipe leak & loss of power?

The leak is by my left leg where the pipe mounts with the small tab. (same as factory spot) The weld is broke about 40 % around the tab. What affect would this have on power (if any). The reason I ask is I've been chasing a loss of power problem all spring & can't figure it out. I tried OMR carb mods & no matter what jetting, float level etc. I've got to top end pull like I used to.

I took the pipe off in May & really shined it. It was a small crack then & when I remounted it again & bolted it down I think I made it worse. I'm really at a loss. I can't figure out this loss of power. It is the top of midrange & topend. Espo. in 1st & 2nd. There is just no "explosion" like there used to be. It feels really flat. Maybe the packing is worn?

If you want to read the stock carb mods thread pages 7-9 be my guest. Perhaps there is something else I haven't tried but at this point I'm very frustrated & willing to listen to any ideas.

problems

Thanks for any ideas.

Check and see if you blew all the packing out of your pipe. Ive done that before. It may have affected your top end. Have you changed octane level?

If its not that Id check piston rings, How old are they?

No, my octane level is always the same. My rings are stock. I bought it in March of 2001.

What is the best way to check those, compression check? Assuming I buy a gage how is it done? I mean is there a certain number times to turn the engine over? etc?

I can't imagine the rings being bad, that would be a terrible disappointment. Is that common to a DS?

Yes, Do a comp test. pull one plug out and screw the fitting in and hold the throttle wide open till the guage ( app 5-7 sec) maxes out at (it should be) around 170psi without the decompression lever as is. Id say your rings are done for. jmo. a comp test will tell some. if it goes from 170-120 within a few mins then you have probs.

with the rings being worn out you might be losing cyl pressure. That might happen after 5 years of riding,, How many hours do you have on your rings approximately?

I'm not really sure about the hours. All I can say is I don't ride often. It would be a shame if the rings are done. I expect better than that.

So are you saying hold the throttle full open while I crank the starter 5-7 seconds (with the engine run switch off of course). So how long should I let the gauge measure the pressure? What is a few minutes?

Thanks

Within 5-7 sec with off/on switch off it should go up to a certain point then max out. It should max out right away.
