Have an 01 DS650 I bought cheap and want to get it where I don't get my backside handed to me by my friends with Raptors. I used to have a Raptor too but wanna give the DS a shot since I have seen and heard good things... I am working with a $3-3500 budget and have a stock bike. What would you guys reccomend? I am a confident wrench so to speak so would do all but the machine work myself. Do not want Nitrous as I'd rather build it solid NA first and then maybe consider some bottle.

Whats it gonna take to not get spanked by my buddies hi compression 686 with flatslides and what not . . . . ?

Thanks in advance for any help. Could also use some suggestions on reputable places to buy parts. Will probably have Kenz do the machining since they are close.

Dave

I think you will get as many different answers as you will get people answering. Clutch springs are a must at any level and a carb change. A couple members to get ahold of would be dunettitude he has a good running and priced build. Choosetolose04 is about to build a stock bore for somewhere in the 2000 dollar range which will run good even off the nitrous. ERBEDS650 has an interesting build that might interest you for a torque monster that is almost done. Just be clear what your looking for and ask lots of questions to find the parts that will work for you. Good sources are TVI Powersports, Ondunes, Ron Wood Racing, and TheBom racing.

azdave what ever directon you go do not let Kenz cycle touch your bike!!! they are the competion!! I speak from experience with Kenz cycle!! They are not a bombardier can-am shop!! I would look at hprresearch.net for info along with ondunes.performance. along with ronwoods racing for parts and diffrent set ups to fullfill your needs!! Like I said kenzcycle is not the bombardier guy!! I have had good luck with desertdawg offroad in fountainhills off of shea boulavard, ask for jay tell him carlton sent you!! you need to figure out what you plan to do with your bomb big bore ,stock bore, desert riding, dunner , drag set up way to many variables for helping you with ideas until you figure out what you want to do. then the opinions with facts will fly at you!! check these places out on your own then come back with what your looking for!! carlton

1. Triple buff Paddles.
2. Full exhaust.
3. 46hv Lectron.
4. Your choice of Cams.
5. Compression of your choice. (piston)
6. Barnett clutch.
7. What ever money you have left, spend on lighter parts. Ei - 520 conversion, axle, hubs, etc....

That right there will give most any full size bike a run for its money. Guaranteed!!

azdave if you do all the work yourself you can have a DS that will absolutely haul for 3000.00 .I had my motor work done so i had some labor costs but even with a swingarm all my parts and labor i was still right around 3000.00.650VIPER laid out most of the things you will want to consider but since you want opinions i will get more specific and give you mine.Cams-HPR Hr3,carb Lectron 46hv,ODP disced end cap, ported intake,22-11-8 triple buff tires on .125 wheels,Lightened hubs,520 chain D.I.D. 520ERT2,proper gearing for your application,HPR 12:1 piston(mine is gasketed for 11.5:1),Head porting by someone capable of producing results not just removing material.I am not a mechanic and i dont claim to be but i know that my combination does very well at the drag hill and that is good enough for me.I went with HPR and ODP for my parts and advice but there are many others who can help you as rcoop said. Cam choice is a big factor on any motor build but i would research them heavily before i decided on what to go with such as HR3...HR3...HR3...HR3....Something must be wrong with my keyboard.LOL.

What do you want to build? Dunner? Comp Hill Racer? let that deside the way you like to build not what anyone tells you, Take you time its a toy, some of these folks will point ya to 1 builder but keep your ears and eyes open there are a few builders and parts MFG for the DS, Heck even E bay has some deals on parts such a carbs and CDIs and Exhausts and Pistons kits, take in the way you ride not what the other persons rides, where you ride, what do you want the quad power band to be Low or Mid or Topend?
Just dont be pressured to play follow the Hypsters.

ERBEDS650-Follow the hypsters?Personally i dont follow anyone but i am smart enough to take my advice on DS motor builds from those who produce results and it is a fact that HPR produces results.I would have no problems spending my money on parts from another DS source but since i am free to choose i choose HPR and i get results. And just so you know i have power everywhere that is why i suggested the HR3 cams.I ride the dunes 30 weekends a year or more and my suggestions are from real world experience so they are valid and true and that is what azdave needs to hear. There are very few parts that i would buy from E-BAY just to save some cash but that is just me.You can have a good dune bike and hill racer with the same motor it just depends on how good you are at choosing your parts and builder.I dont have an agenda i just want to help, how about you?

Cool your jets Duneit, I never mentioned a builder/MFG/or persons all I said was E bay has some deals.
And the Hypster statment was to warn about on this forum that some folks may try to push product, and builders, again no names, and was only mentioned as a freindly gesture about such persons that are in forums.

All of the above replies have made a lot of sense. First and foremost, you have to decide what exactly are you wanting to do with this DS 650. Give us a little more info and then we can all steer you in the right direction. Different riding conditions will call for different engine components as well as different setup configurations.

But as for me, Im still running a bone stock engine with a barnett 9-disk clutch, 48HV Lectron carb, Vortex CDI & Ron Wood Racing In-frame drag pipe. It does ok for a stock bike.....
