what octane & oil brand for 800 outty
Thanks for the reply, I am suprised that they require 87 octane and not 89 or higher and the oil weight seems awful light to me but that must be what is required from the factory. Thanks for the info, just trying to get all my ducks lined in a row before I go buy this beast.

I think the 87 octane is to keep the engine from running any hotter that it has to. It will run on 85 or 89, but 87 is what is recommended.
Polaris engine oil is 0W synthetic. I used amsoils 0W-40 cause they recommend it for our type motors. BRP says to used 5W-40 synthetic or 10W-40 mineral oil, so you're right, the 0W should sound a little light. Personally, I think just about any multi viscosity oil would work as long as it meets the severe use standards and is changed regularly.

Higher octane is only necessary for high compression engines, like the YFZ450, DS650 etc. The owners manual for my Dodge Ram W/Hemi advises AGAINST 91 octane and recommends 89.. The manual for the 800 calls for 5W-40 Synthetic with an SH, SG or SJ API rating or 5W-30 mineral based. I try to stick to Chevron, Shell or Unocal(76) brands of gas. I'd also recommend a secondary fuel filter.

Its nice to hear some level headed knowledge spoken. Kawiyowee, you rode me pretty hard the other night. All I want to do is what is right. I am all for synthetic oil, myself. Last year I changed to synthetic in my harley. Its funny that for years they have been using 3 different types of oils in 3 different places on the bikes and now synthetic oil is used everywhere on the bikes. So today. I called 5 different can-am dealers around the country. The lady in Chicago, who was asking her service guy, didn't sound like they had a clue. Saying that the quads (outy 800's) came from the factory with just a small amount of synthetic oil in the engine. The I spoke with a guy from Denver who really knew his stuff. He was really a nice guy that shed alot of light on the subject. Well, before I spoke with him, I talked with my dealer who is sticking to his guns about putting the straight mineral oil back in after break in. Wll, this guy from Denver said the the quad does not have synthetic from the factory. That the piston would not seat properly(which I don't really know) But he went on to say that Can-am Definitely wants you to put synthetic back into the motor after break-in. Its not just to sell their product or that it cost more. But because it is good oil and that works best. Anyway Thanks for your and raidermikes input.

I've had shop mechanics tell me you "can't run synthetic in these things, it's too slippery".....If you loaded this Outlander with synthetic from the factory it would be JUST fine. I'm not sure how many vehicles come from the factory with synthetic.
When I get a quad, I generally go on a couple of long rides then immediately switch to synthetic.....

Thanx Kawiyowee, I have been tryin' to get my serviceman to repeat what he said. but he seems to ignore what I said. He changes the subject, and when I hold him to what he said, he kinda backs off. I think he was sorta mouthin', if you know what I mean. When I figure out how to post a new thread, I have a good one for you, and I am pissed!!! Can-am is starting to let me down a bit.....we'll talk about it soon,k .....
