Default Outty 800 top speed 70 MPH--Why?

My OUtty 800 XT seems to be opening up a little more. Last night I hit 72 on a loose gravel road and ran out of room. The machine did not feel safe however on that road at that speed. I am pretty sure on hard packed road I could get at least 75 maybe more. Seems like the 10 hour deal might be the ticket. I do have stock tires. Are there better tires than the Carlisles that came on the machine?

on the gravel at that speed it will handle much better in 4x4. i personally like the act's alot. they are a good all around tire.

81k is the limit, what does yours say when you top out, what rims and tires, pressure?it took a good 30 hard hrs, before i would call mine broke in. it should run better after your 1st tune up. was you on hard or soft surface, but however it should never sound like it is missing. check you battery cables to see if they are tight, i know mine was loose.

If you were able to get to 72 without cutting out then I'm sure you are just fine. You are right though, doesnt' feel real safe at that speed. Sure gets there fairly quick though.

Yeah, really on loose gravel I don't have any business going 72 or even 62. The machine felt very unstable. I hit a big rock last night in a corn field that was worked up. Real glad I had my skid plate on.

Outty 800 top speed 70 MPH--Why? Because 70 mph is crazy fast on a ATV and to go faster is just nuts.

I ride with two guys who have 800's and I ride a 700 King.... One guy I can beat on top end every time the other beats me every time... Both machines can out accelerate me but I cannot explain why one has a higher top end... They both use the same mechanic at the same dealership... go figure...

do they both ride the xt? each motor even being the same can run diff.i ride the max,its puts down the torque fast, but it has a flat powerband in my opion. they can get lots more from the motor, but i believe they want to keep in on the more reliable side of things, if you know what i mean. they could put a hopped up 800 in a 2 wheel quad if they wanted, so let us ask ourselves why they dont.

anybody hear that the speedo's were an issue with the outtys? when i questioned my top end my local dealer said there were havin a issue with warning lights erratic speeds etc? this was in may so im sure they got it right. ive been a snowmobile guy since i could walk and there is a big rule never get the same one as your buddy because 1 is always faster and that sucks. its good when you get the faster one but on the other hand it stinks when you loose. my outty was 70 tops till the last time i got 74 and could have got 75 i ran out of room. it was a short run also on tar i would have got 77-78 mph no prob and with a xt thats fast on an atv. any pcm mods?

the speedo is nothing more than a few metal particles on the sensor, just pull it out wipe clean and change oil.the sensor is magnatized.
