A Winter Project
#1
DSers...need some inspiration here. I've got my '01 completely stripped down to the nuts and bolts and have dreams of having one that represents come Spring. Kinda glad I chose to do this project as I've found several worn parts that would have led to other problems in the future...
I've got a few questions: Powdercoating...anything about it you learned the hardway that if you'd known going in would have been better? Any testimonials from this timezone?
When you replaced your bearings, o-rings, etc. what resource did you use? With no part specs to go by it's hard to go to PepBros and ask for the right stuff. I'm almost certain you guys didn't pay premium for these "off-the-shelf" parts did you?
Engine needs to shine a little so I am tossing around the ideas of either polishing, powdercoating or plating my case covers,etc...resources/opinions? TVI still doing the polished exchange?
Steering stem got boomeranged pretty good in a downhill endo manuver--memory is fuzzy as it happened 3+ years ago...I'd like to go taller and shiney...choices?
NEED a custom gripper seat cover...
Testimonial--I recently received SS bolt kit from Fastenerguy on ebay and am pleased with the product and labled packages. Not a perfect collection but worth $100 IMO. Once you install them on your cases you'll be inclined to want your cases shiney too!
On hand:
Eyeball Engineering Swingarm +2.5"
ASR Upper a-arms
Stock replacement lowers
Fresh black plastics
Carbon Fiber Rad Shrouds
Running HPR 14:1 lightweight piston, oversized valves, 109 cams, ported & polished head and intake, lectron 46.
Planned:
IMS RD footpegs
SS brakelines
Reworked/subdued wiring
Exhaust
520 chain conversion
???
If you've got the time--any tips, suggestions or resources that you'd share I'd appreciate it!

On the powdercoating, make sure that you have bare metal on all electrical connections too ground. Also, from the sub-frame, if the battery is grounded to it, make sure there is a path for ground to the main frame.
My first powdercoating, I burnt up a RW cdi and lost time rideing with friends.

Thanks for the responses, guys! I'll definately be going with jettrim...very nice looking, flyinds.
I don't know if Eyeball Engineering will still produce a swingarm for the DS...I bought this one a couple years ago from Mario. And I agree, very good looking! and well built.
Thanks, DuneDevil for the tips on the powdercoat issues.

I love the powdercoating but you will need to look out for that like dunedevil said...the bike well buzz from the started relay if the ground isn't clean enough and don't keep pressing the button or the cdi will go bad...What colors are you choosing and what plastics...wish ya luck
