We are assuming it does not have reverse....because it is so lightweight.
If they managed to put reverse in it, and keep the weight down, that would indeed be a engineering marvel....
Why not design reverse in, then let it be removable for additional weight savings? If only 3% actually race, they would certainly take the time and trouble to remove it.....and the rest of us would have reverse, albeit at the cost of 8 lbs, as has been speculated on this thread.
Real racers will take lights off and take other weight saving measures as well....
Only the shadow, and BRP, knows for sure.......

I can't see reverse weighing 8lbs. The Polaris Pred in 04 weighed 412lbs with no reverse. In 05 reverse was added, and it came in at 415lbs. 3-4lbs seems more reasonable to add reverse. You have a added gear, a cable and a **** to twist or pull, that is it. No 8lbs there.

WTF........ i dont know about you guys but whether i would be at the dunes or the track or the woods i always got my coolers, trailer, and GRILL!!!! a couple of fat burgers or chicken breasts and all the sides that accompany it make 8lbs. very unimportant. i mean seriously, depending on how much i have ate, drank, last bathroom trip, and full gear(boots, chest protector, etc.) or just my helmet, hell my weight fluctuates at least 8lbs. so i guess only 130lb. riders will prosper on this thing? i think not. i think reverse would be great and the majority wants it but if it does not have it i will probably still get one along with alot of other people.

This debate hasnt been about a 450 class quad, its been about you saying can-am fell short by not offering a reverse on the 450 when indeed its a "450 class race quad".
Well Can-Am will turn off a number of recreational buyers without reverse, whether you think it's falling short is a personal preference. Those who want a 450 will flock to the KFX, those looking for a high performance trail bike will end up with 700R's and those wanting a dune bike will end up on a DS650 or another big-bore.

It has been about the 450 class, it's been about the fact that few of these machines are raced seriously and an even smaller fraction would know the difference if a reverse gear was present in terms of performance and weight. And as some have said the GNCC classes do provide the occasional justification for a reverse option.

Most of these machines will be ridden on the trails by people who want the performance and agility of a race bike for everyday use and of course a few people who like to look like they can race. For these riders reverse will at worst case be unnecessary but it will not impinge on their riding in any way. On the other hand a large number of consumers will flock to the machine because it is more friendly for the recreational riding that most of these buyers do anyway.

The downside to including reverse is vastly outweighed by the benefit to the typical consumer. You'll have a few pissed off people like you but most of us will be happy to have a bike that has the performance and handling of the YFZ/LTR and the benefit of reverse like the KFX.

Maybe have reverse as an option. Also they could do what ski doo does for their reverse. Its called RER and adds 0 weight.

The sleds that do this are 2-Stroke, I am not totally sure but I don't you can make a 4-stroke run in reverse.

ATVBuddy,

I dunno man. I've had my fair share of trail riding and I never used reverse. Further, I dont think Can Am, with the selection of quads they have,is shutting anybody out. In fact, I think they are catering to the demands of enthusiasts who really recreate with a true race quad. But I do agree with you, if peeps want reverse in a 450, there is another choice. So, again, nobody is (lol) shutting anybody out.

I can see clearly Can-Am's strategy, and I agree with it 100%. Its about fricken time they get off of thier duff and make something decent for the racers. Heck, we all mod our quads, and Ive yet to see anybody yet that modifies a quad with an engine replacement with reverse. Have any of you??? No???? LOL. Ok, now you know im just funnin with you guys, but I swear you sound like a bunch of old ladies. Get off the quad and pull it backwards - really, its not hard - and its even easier now that its lightweight.!!!

Better yet, use that lightweight handleing ability to keep yourself sliding off the trail and up a tree - then you wont need reverse, or even have to get off your quad.

But what do I know? Sooner or later, two wheelers will have reverse too .... maybe?? Perfect for your grandma! LOL

Honda Goldwing beat you too it Marky!
The DS450s may not need reverse but the old DS650 could stand to have it added.

I can't wait for the next installment on the Can-Am website, what technological marvels await? The next segment mentions a driveline Shaft drive???

No matter, the bar has been raised, I understand the 09 Yamaha YFZs will be fuel injected with reverse AND will parallel park themselves
