Any Bomb riders in the Hatfield/McCoy area?
#1
Me and a few buddies are thinking of heading over to southern W. Virginia december 4,5,6 (tuesday-thrusday).
Never been on any of the Hatfield/McCoy trails before, and we are wondering which one of the 6 systems are the best to hit.
We have not decided wether we are camping in our enclosed trailer rigs, or renting a cabin/lodge/cottage.
If we come, we will show up tuesday Dec 4th around noon, and leave thursday Dec 6th morning, most likely.
We want some wide open fast trails that go for miles, but we also want some difficult black label stuff to navigate as well. None of us have oversize tanks, a couple have the ability to pack a gallon of extra fuel on rear rack, and half of us run 110 octane race gas so fueling in a town at a gas station is not an option. Basically, we gotta stay close enough to camp to get back on one tank.
I've been all over the main website for this area, seen the maps, read all the lodging info, etc., and watched the few videos they have, but want to hear it from you locals guys, and also would be cool if a fellow bomber could give us a tour and help make our drive well worth the while. There will be 3 or 4 of us on sport quads, one on a dirtbike, but make no mistake we are experienced riders and are capable of going places and making climbs that most 4x4 riders would think a sport quad would never go and we want some action but also want some fast pace stuff too, like wide sweeping corners and burms on fire roads, along with some technical articulation and funky stuff, but big mud holes are not what we looking for - we'd like to cover some ground, not creep along in the slop, but I'm sure there is plenty of mud and we will cross it where necesary but not go looking for it if you know what I mean.

Hey man,
My Gf and I was just up there for a 3 day weekend last week. We rode the "Indian Ridge Trail" and camped out in the back of our enclosed trailer at the "KOA" campgrounds that have cabins for rent also. It was a nice place to stay and accessed the trail head directly from the campgrounds. There are some wide open places to open her up and some black trails to accomplish also. We had a blast and can't wait to go back again. It's a 5 hr drive from Greenville, SC. I rode my 2008 Renegade 800 and she rode her 2008 Yahama YZ450F. There were plenty of sport quads and dirtbikes on these trails having a great time.
Hope this gives you a little insight on what kind of time to expect.

Hightower, I visited H&M from Ohio in late September with a group for 3 days. We hit the Browning Fork and Dingess Rum trails. Each trail is over a 100 miles of fun. We had one day of rain that actually ended up being the best (kept the dust down). The trails offer a lot of variety and are well worth the drive.
We stayed in the town of Gilbert at the Browning Fork Bunkhouse (search Google for it), $80/per night with room for 7 friends (one room house with 3 bunk beds). In a trailer park, but lots of parking, all comforts and you can ride directly to the trail. We thought about camping, but didn't want the hassle of hauling and setting up for such a short stay. Next trip we'll probably stay in Logan, as it is a small city and more centralized on trails.
I have an Outlander 400 and did not need 4x4 the entire time, but we also did not search out the black trails. The ones we hit were impressive. I still marvel at how those trails were ever created. Whoever ran the dozer had nerves of steel.

Hightower what's up man. I'm looking at DS650 on Ebay from your state. If I can get that DS I may join you at Hatfield as I haven't rode since the summer. My DS bud I was up there with had some friends who went.. they all loved it. Mentioned as muddy as you are... the locals don't mind you coming in and eating at thier place of business. I understand it's pretty muddy there, something you want to keep in mind.

Cool guys, this place sounds like a lot of fun.
Entomber - this trip is still kinda up in the air for me right now, it depends on if my work schedule, currently it looks like I can go, but we have a technician at work out with a medical problem right now that could end up changing things for me.. When I got a solid answer, I will let you know.
So where in Indiana is this quad Entomber? If you are coming over to get it, then definitely plan on riding a day at Badlands if its convenient for you, I'd love to hook up with ya and give you the grand tour of all its 800 acres has to offer. Its all riding though, no real racing opps. But the riding is fun, and its twice the size of SL.

Hey Hightower.. looks like that guy selling the DS wasn't in my favor. I had the cash in hand and was readying to go up there but he was bent on having the $$$ right now. I'll just finish my current build. I want to check out Hatfield, maybe sometime in the future. I only rode once this year and that was at Silver Lake. I'm going to hurry up on this bike and get it done and over with. Traveling has been occupying my time. I'm returning to China end of Dec and prob return again in March or April.
I gotta make ya that music CD. Let me know if you still go...
