i've been foolin around with the jetting lately in my ds and most of the time it runs pretty good but the odd time it really bogs down when i'm revving low and then punch it and in high gears like 4th and 5th it just doesnt seem real strong, does this mean i'm rich? i have done most of omr's carb mods, the spring, holes in the slide and snorkel tubes but havnt done the air jet. i have a hmf slip on, big gun cdi, uni filter, and dynojet kit with a 185 main right now with the needle in the third groove. also how much affect would my float have on this? i've never checked what its at, thanks for any help

Float level can make a difference - typically not a major one, but it DOES matter. Also reving low and punching it sounds like you need to adjust the idle mixture screw (Under the carb near the engine). If you haven't switched to a #45 Pilot jet, you may want to consider that, too. With the #45 pilot, and 60 degrees Outdoor temp or so, 2 1/4 turns from lightly seated is the right setting (for me).
With the CDI, exhaust etc. (Unless you are at high altitude or in the desert), Your main would appear to be lean as well. Maybe some of the guys with Aftermarket exhausts can chime in on needle position - I'm running at the 3rd spot with the CDI, but without an exhaust. Would an exhaust warrant the 4th position?

#1- Check float level
#2- Check size of pilot jet
If #40 pilot- turn pilot screw out 4 1/2 turns
It #45 pilot- turn pilot screw out 3 1/2 turns
In the summer, above 65 F. Turn in 1/2 turn
#3- Because you have extra holes in air lid:
Jet one size larger to 190 main jet.
Check sparkplug for color:
White on porcelain Lean
Tan on porcelain Good
Dark Brown Bad Too Rich
If you find jetting requires use of 200, then order the #40 airjet
or if you notice power dropoff at high rpm's.

you should try a 170 or 175 jet , that 185 my be to big. i just rejetted my bike yesterday, i went from a 165 to a 180 and my bike bogged so bad i dident think i was going to make it home. i put the 165 back in and it ran fine, so play with that 170 or 175 and see how that work.
