a good setup for the ds
#1
i have a pretty much stock 2000 ds 650. it has the trinity stage IV full exhaust, k&n filter without airlid. i am running a 195 main jet on it, but thats all i moved on the carb. do i need to move or change any other things on the carb? its a stock carb by the way. the bike sounds fine but it backfires a little. I am barely starting to fix it, and i want to know what would be a good setup for it.
i am new on this forum, so if anyone could help me, it would be Bad A$$

dsengineer, when i bought my full exhaust it came with the main jet already. it was a 185. I bought it of the internet form atv galaxy which is in california. When i put it on, it felt a little weird so i called the local atv dealership. I talked to the mechanics there and they told me i had to run a 195 here in texas because of the difference in the sea level. They said that trinity based the jet on their sea level so i had to use a bigger jet. I changed it and sometimes it doenst respond when i throttle it. It makes a noise like if it is out of gas and it barely runs. I have to turn it off for a minute or two and then it will work fine for a while. then it will do it again. I haven't ridden it since it started doing that.

If your higher in elevation than ATV Galaxy in Cali then you need to go leaner on the main jet rather than richer. I would go with a 175 to 180. My DS ran like a raped ape in Glamis with a 180 main, which is just over sea level. With 180 in Utah it's way too rich so I'm changing to 170 and may even need to go lower.

thanks for the help. I think i will be better off if i just take it to one of my friends at a dealership and let him adjust the quad so it can run how its supposed to. That way he can make those mods on the carb. since im gonna pay, he might as well do that too. all i want is to hit the trails and kick some A$$ again. by the way, i am the only one with a ds where i live. everyone has 450s, 250rs, and banshees, and they were shocked when i pulled away from some of them on my huge (supposed to be slow) quad.

South Texas, do a search for OMR and do his stock carb mods. I am trying them this weekend. Everyone that has done this cheap mod in here approves. I also ride with a bunch of other brands. When you own a DS you need to be able to do it yourself. Search around these old threads and you will be the best mechanic in your area on the DS650.

Maineiac. Thanks for the input. Im going to make those mods on my carburetor, but its only going to be a little project. I am about to purchase a dual carb I found in the forum, and i hope it makes a difference on my quad. Im still doing the mods on the old carb just to have it as a backup. Thanks again.

Hey with your set up I would say that you should go with a single carb like a Mikuni TM45 or a LectronHV46. They would give you a really nice boost in power and be perfect for you. If your duning it I wouldn't go with duals. If your just dragging by all means go with the duals. IMO!

hey silverbomb. i mostly drag or just ride around for distraction. So, do you think those carbs will work out pretty good. I just want to scare my friends a little and show them what these beasts can do.

You can scare your friends with the power of the single carbs. You don't need duals unless you're going with a 730 big bore or something bigger.
