Brake Failure 2008 Can-Am Outlander 800
Tell your friends that it is the new ABS system Can Am installed for 2008.
No really the brake noise, while horriffic sounding, is quite normal. Mine usually only does it when I stop. When moving the brake makes little if any noise when I apply them. This is usually cured by going to EBC Extreme duty pads.
My belt whines only in neutral or park. As soon as I put it in high, low or reverse. it stops. Maybe you have some dust in the belt housing.

I have to say I agree with MC Ballpeen. it dosn;t say anywhere in the manual that the brakes are supposed to be quiet. brakes are essentially frisction on 2 surfaces... the pad the factory uses for the outty causes the breaks to make noise during that friction process. if you don;t like it buy better pads. it is an optional upgrade. they are not that expensive. you will save yourself a tonne of agrivation and frustration, which you seem to be experiencing, all for what $60 in brake pads? Honestly I understand why you are peeved, you did not know they made noise, and if you had known you might not have bought the bike because quiet brakes is important to you. and as a consumer, I agree BRP should listen to and even validate your concerns. but being the devils advocate here, seriously, did you wait until AFTER you bought the bike to come to the internet and find a forum to talk about the bike and it's issues? Because I'm sure if you had of come to the forums before you bought it and askes people what issues were common, and what people liked and did not like about the bike you would have found that it is pretty common for people to be unsatisfied with the brake noise. but just because you don;t like it dosn't mean its a problem. the brakes work. and although noisy they do work. personally I think you'll get used to it. and if you don;t want to get used to it. buy heavy duty pads. simple cheap and effective.

probably a good move dump your brand new outlander you'll only loose 20% in immediate depreciation should loose more than 2 grand on your 10 invested. that way you can save $60 on break pads. and never have to worry about hearing the brakes. I'd probably do the same thing.

No, don't bother fixing it, or selling it. Give it to me. I mean if Honda is what you want, then go and spend the money on one. Live with the lack of power and three wheel drive. At least you'll have quiet brakes. Geez, I'm glad no one told this guy about skid plates. He'd have had a cow with spending $300 on skids for a $10,000 machine, not to mention the shocks and tires, etc, etc.....

I am not sure why people seem to want to bash this guy. All Reasonable People know Breaks are not sposed to chatter or Make loud noises. Alittle squeking now and again is normal but any more than that there is issues.
I would feel the same way, after buying a 10K ATV, I have no intention of replaceing any factory part on my ATV purchase. I plan on riding it just the way it is.
Canam should address this issue, like any other manufactor would.

What is the story here. If brakes get dirty or full of mud, they sqeak, sqwak and make all kinds of noise, but they work. If you are riding in snow and pack them full of ice, they will not work. All the quads use the same design disc brakes. The pads are a trade off between high heat performance and a softer pad that does not squeak. I agree that the noise, when it happens occasionaly, is a distraction, but small price to pay for the performance I get. It is a shame that some have had such problems, but I have found the ones on my 06 Outlander to be performing well.
