how long between valve adjustments??
I just bought a, well it says a 1999 on the title i guess but I thought they didnt make them in 1999, parts are only offered for a 2000 and newer so I am guessing they consider mine a 2000. Well anyways this quad has never been touched since the day it was brand new, it was a one owner quad and he rode the hell out of this thing I would have to say it has more than 10,000 miles on it, thats all he did was ride the thing. Well the problem that I have is it will only start if you pull start it, and it seems to backfire sort of through the carb. I am betting it needs the valves adjusted and I was wondering when I will have to check them again? like how many hours? obviously before 10k. Thanks Tom

I am guessing that you are referring to the DS650. The valves should have been done at the first 10 hours, and then about every 100 hours or so after that. My guess, is at this point to save yourself some major issus, I would do a complete refreash on the head. New valves, springs and the works. It would also be worth thinking about new rings on the piston at that many hours. I mean at that point it is only two more bolts.

yes its a ds650, yeah I ordered a je 11.5 piston from ebay, how much is it to redo the head? where would you send it or would you just do it yourself, I can change the valves and springs is there anything else that you have to do. I know for a fact that it has over 10K mostly just trail and gravel roads, it has never been touched since day one except for a new fan. So do they consider my quad a 2000? and if so some aftermarket parts start at 2001 and newer are they the same, as the 2000. Thanks for any info Tom

You have a 2000 model. Almost everything is interchangable until you get to the 04 model year and then you have different headlights and swingarms. The connector for the CDI changed I believe after 02. Your clutch actuator arm and rod could probably use replacing. They are made much stronger now.

If you can do it all yourself, I would order the parts from OMW racing, or RWR. both could fix ya up. Point of information on the JE 11.5-1 off e-bay. some have been found to be actually a higher compression rating then that requiring higher octane race fuel. The Stir could provide more info for you on that.
And if I am having someone re-do my head, it is going to OMW racing. Eric is top notch.
You should be good with any parts labled 2000-2002 in those years.
