ds 650 plastics
#1
hey anyone.....i have a question....i have the 2000 ds 650 and as u know its yellow. I want black plastics with yellow accents...is it possible to get a good paint job on the plastics that wont come off easily or is it better if i just buy some new black plastics? oh i painted it once already but the paint chipped off really fast.

I've seen some sweet paint jobs on plastics before. You could probably do it fine if you have a quality job done. You just have to watch out for tweaking the plastic, the paint cracks easy.

thats exactly what happened with the paint i have right now.it started cracking in the back fender and it got pretty big now so ive been putting stickers on it to cover it.it turned out pretty good though with the stickers.

Here's what I recommend: Buy some Krylon Fusion, which is paint that bonds right into plastic, so after 1 week it is crack-proof. Just take the plastic off, take the decals off, lightly sand off the clearcoat/top layer of plastic, then spray it on following the directions on the can.
It's a pretty cheap (cost wise) paint but it works GREAT! I've used it on a few R/C cars and have had numerous collisions with them without the paint starting to crack at all.

Not sure where you can find it in Texas.... you can get it at any Canadian Tire in Canada though! lol. Maybe just try a local hardware store? Home Depot or Lowe's might have something similar though.
About the whole not touching it for a week... I think its you can pick it up after like 2 hours/touch it, but it won't be fully bonded for a week. So basically if you paint it outside, let it dry a few hours, then you can move it back inside or in your garage or whatever.

the number one thing to remember is "a paint job is only as good as the prep work and time put into it"
take the time to sand off the clear coat down (so no longer shiny) the use Prep-All to clean any contaminates and dust off the surface then spray with about 3 coats of a color of your choice (black in your case) and clear coat on top of that, i do not recommend rattle can clear coat. u can easily paint it your self with rattle can or paint gun and turn out great, but dont rattle can clear coat it, take it to a paint shop and let them do it for u
thx

Here is a tip I learned . Take a propane torch and lightly hit the plastic with it until you see moisture and move the flame. do a small area at a time then wipe it down with acetone. What you are doing is removing the release agent in the plastic.
Prime and paint.
