Default Help ds650 wont start

ok so i was out today and everything was great then the ds just died. tried to start it but nothing, the battery is dead (brand new battery) so my buddy tries to pull me and i tried to start it and nothing. so get back to my truck and get the jumper cables out and hooked it up and the ds starts fine but as soon as i take the cable off of the battery it dies. so im thinking stator is bad. any ideas?

i would remove and clean your main ground. and add an extra ground or two.
a bad ground will kill a battery fast, and burn electrical parts. and more than likly regulator not stator. but a bad batt or ground will cause the same prob, charge the battery to full charge do your grounds and try it befor you do anything else.
jumping it wont help if the batt is completly dead and losing contact somewhere.
also check all electrical connections as well.

metal shavings isn't good, but you said if you jumped it it started. the main ground , just follow the negitive (black wire) to the frame. i had a similar prob. ran a wire from there to motor, and another from batt to frame (hooked to rear grab bar bolt) i ruined a yusha battery that was new, it wouldn't idle just die when jumped. new batt, new grounds and its been going strong ever since. hope the shavings is from the clutch, and not the mains going, i cant remember if the stator is dry or wet. but change the oil and filter befor tryin anything else. tear the filter apart and check for metal brass looking metal is mains silver is clutch i beleave.

yea i think its clutch, shavings are silver. pulled the filter and there was none in there. yea we hooked up jumper cables and it started up fine but as soon as we took the cables off it died. stator is wet. im going to charge up the batt and see is it starts tomorrow. if it does could it be the rectifier?

it could but if the terminals lost contact your batt might be bad . after thinking clean the wires at the batt. since jumpers useally jump across batt to wire when connected. it could have a bad connection at the batt, so the charge wasn't reaching the batt. the regulator tells the stator to charge. . so if all else fails replace the regulator. were you in deep water befor it quit? if not i still think your losing contact somewhere.

nope was not in deep water. i took the ds out 2 weeks ago and rode all day with no probs. im gonna take the batt in tomorrow to auto zone to be charged and tested and ill put it back on the atv if its good. will see if it holds charge. if not im thinking regulator. i cleaned the terminals after every use. if the battery goes low shouldnt the atv still run?

ok so i got a new battery today. the old battery was holding a charge but only showed 100 cranking amps. put new battery on and ds fired right up. i checked the voltage with reg/rectifier disconected while running and it showed 12.80. i reconected it and it jumped up to 13.8-9 and after i revved it up it jumped to 14.0. turned atv off and voltage dropped to 12.79. turned on again and jumped back up to 13.8. so what would all this mean then? is reg/rectifier good? was it just my battery taking a dump?

Yup, your battery was junk.. One of the plates inside the battery probably came loose & created a short.

yea i put the batt on at lunch today and when i left it was reading 12.76. got home and was reading 12.75 so started it up and it was reading 14.01 at idle. checked it again 1 hour later and was reading 14.08 at idle. rev it up and it jumps to 14.11. turned on fan and lights and dropped down to 13.96. so yea im thinking it was the battery too. when i first got the ds the batt was dead so i had it charged and took it out for 3 hrs and it did fine. this last time i went out i was doing a lot of jumps. must of knocked something loose.
