In a car you can disconnect the battery after it is running and the alternator will keep it running. If it dies then you know you are running off of battery power cause the alternator won't keep it running. As for the DS I'm not sure if you can do that because the DS seems to be so dependent on the battery.

With the key off check your battery with a multimeter. Should read around 12 volts. Key on, hit start, voltage should drop to around 9.5v. After the motor is running voltage at the battery should hold steady around 14.25.
Hope this helps...

if you were running off of battery alone there wouldn't be a way for the battery to go from 12V to 14.25V if it wasn't charging.

Ditto. If you were running on battery alone you would see it drain and not recharge. The 14.25 is the system operating as it should.

Yes, and eventually it won't rise enough after sitting awhile to even restart your bike. It will just stay drained. Are all of your fuses good, and your grounds good? Connections tight? Anything aftermarket tied into the elec system?

Probably a bad regulator/rectifier assembly
