DS450 Dune Setup

DS450 Dune Setup
Been gone for awhile but just purchased a DS450. Can't find much info on them for dune setups.
The quad is stock except for airbox, pipe and controller. Just ordered a +6 swingarm and 72" rollout 7 paddle extreme ultra-lights.
Any advice on gearing for a 200 lb rider? Oregon dunes and tree chutes will be the setting.

lol, I have been out of the game for 3 years. Was the DS450 a flop? Why can't I find hardly any info on dune and hillshooter setups? I can't find a single DS450 on any of the forums with anything longer than a +2 swingarm. lol, what good is that????
I figured the CanAm community would be crawling with every setup under the sun.
Trial and error is expensive............

Good to see you back around Ron. I think the 450 appealed mostly to the MX crowd, I don't see a lot of them out in the sand. The "in" thing for the dunes nowadays is the RZR XP900 and the RZR S. Gazillions of them out there.
If I can rid myself of a few of the six DS650's sitting in the garage I'll be rolling an XP.
Anybody in SoCal looking for a DS???

Ace - I have a 2011 RZR S LE. I have driven an XP. The suspension and the power are nice....but they are dealing on the "S" model. I bought mine out the door for $11,300. Couldn't get them to budge on the XP so $5k price difference just wasn't worth it to me.
The "S" goes anywhere this fat old man wants to go. :-)
That reminds me......thanks for the link, Ed! :-) He He

Vic is right, the main group for the 450 is in the mx or desert racing crowd, I think the reason for this is that the 450 came out WAY too late in the game. But I do know of a kid here that races his in mx and dunes it also, as far as I know all he did for gearing is one down in the front. And hes runnin 22x11x8 8 paddle haulers, hope to see ya out and about down here or maybe we will take our junk up there and try to make a weekend happen.
Oh, yeah, I also agree with the s x s thing, I love my Rhino and so do the boys, I just cant wait till I get more power in it!!!

I have a DS650 Baja X with EFI & Turbo (85 RWHP) with Elkas and rode my friend's stock DS450 in the dunes. I really liked the DS450. All the power of a Banshee but the light weight handling characteristics of the old 250R.
I wish I knew the DS450 was coming before I purchased my DS650 & put all the mods on it. I would have waited and just put Elkas on the DS450. The HP to weight % would have been the same.
You don't have to do much to make a DS450 into a duner. I have no idea why you would need a 6" extended swing arm unless you run nitrous. The DS450 is balanced perfectly for aggressive dune riding and adding that long of a swing arm will make it hard wheely.
Don't get me wrong, I like my DS650 with EFI & turbo as a duner (i don't go to the hills or drags but actually dune it). It has plenty of power and the ride is incredible, like the old Quadzilla, but it does have greater weight to throw around.
I'm always thinking of trying to sell the DS650 and getting a DS450, but I have over $18,000 invested in the 650 and its like new.
The reason you don't see a lot of DS450s is because it was released right when the economy went bad and it doesn't have Honda, Yamaha, or Suzuki on the side. The DS450 is the most powerful, lightest, best handling sport ATV right out of the box. Can Am just doesn't have the name recognition of the 'Big 3'.
See you at the dunes....

Thanks for the replies. The +6 arm is for the tree chutes in Oregon. We have long trails that are very steep. You can't run any stock bike out of some of them. The +6 arm is for safety. :-)
The right gearing for this setup appears to be 13/42 (-1 CS)......at least for my 200 lb ****.
The 450 runs really good and it is far more comfortable to ride than a YFZ. The riding position is more like a Raptor in my opinion.
