ds750 or ds1000
#11
I have built 3 DS 1000's and a DS 1300 with the Suzuki GSXR engines, I have ridden with a DS 750 and it did a good job on the sand, but my favorite is the 1000 for all around riding, you will spend just as much time putting the newer more powerful fuel injected engine in than your older 99 and size and weight wise they are almost identical. IF your budget allows do the 05-06 GSXR 1000 (it has a shallower oil pan than the 07's and newer) You will not have regrets, it is a very worthwhile project. In fact last year there was an article in Sand Sport magazine on how to build a DS 1000 and was very detailed. I worked with the author and builder of that conversion bike and he did a fine job laying out step by step on what is involved- it will save you a 100 hrs of sitting and staring trying to figure out how you are going to make 10 different functions fit in the same area- ( been there too Ray lol!)

Thanks, Major, all the replies and info on the web have convinced me to scrap the 750 and go with the 1000. I have joined a couple of salvage sites to find a complete bike for the build. I have been following the build in Sand Sports it has been a good source of info and insight . Once i get started i will be sure to post some pics. I hope you dont mind if i send some questions your way as they come up.

Majorecho, you set the standard for a really nice conversion!! your yellow bike was the best I've ever seen and thats what I aimed at. Had mine welded to the welding table for two months. It goes like this . If this goes there will that fit and will it look nice. I was able to use the stock tank and kept the radiator in the stock location.

I'll never forget taking Majorecho's yeller DSXR1000 for a ride man, talk about a **** eating grin! I climbed the valley of sand mountain in 3rd gear winding over 10K on the tach, and he said no man climb it in 2nd. Talk about a rush - 14,000rpm in 2nd gear doing 70mph UP the mountain! Its hard enough to break 70 wide open on most bikes going downhill!
And the billet flame engine mounts man, we need a picture posted here of that build, its incredible.

I built a DS R1 conversion a couple years ago, it turned out great. I sold it a few months ago and am going to build a GSXR1000 conversion now. Just picked up the '01 DS last week for the build. Now shopping for the right motor for the right price. Will definately be checking out the info on your link up there.
My last one I used the stock tank with a secondary tank for the R1 fuel pump. I had my doubt on this setup, but it worked flawlessly.
Big Ray- I never even thought to put elbows on the injectors, good idea. It seems like it would increase fuel velocity and gain some power somewhere. Also would make easy plumbing for a turbo setup.
Did you notice any down side for the elbows on the injectors?

Don't know if it hurt or helped hp by turning the injectors down, and running with a 10 inch long turn down exhaust on the end of the headers threw the tunning way off. had to get it on the dyno and remap it. my motor is 03-04. the fuel pump fit in the bottom of the stock tank. I did loose a lot of ground clearence, but still an awsome duner with a plus 4 swing arm. if you need any detailed pictures let me know.
