Dead Traxter 500 XL
#1
Informational post only. Was working on a Traxter 500 that would not turn on. When the key was turned to ON, either one, there were no lights at all on the instrument cluster. No crank, nothing. No fuses were blown. MPEM was the suspect from the previous owner who sold it to my father in law for $200. I pulled the MPEM and sent to Burl Finkelstein to for him to look at and see if it was fried. He suspected that it was okay as no fuses were blowing. When he looked at it, he found it to be just fine and returned it. He did advise me to check wiring. After I finally got to it, in about a year - it was located at a distance, I began checking continuity from the positive battery cable through all the fuses and found those to be good. A schematic helps immensely. You can find service books on eBay reasonably. I then checked each circuit on the output of the fuses from the positive battery cable. The connection to the starter solenoid was open. Opened up the wiring harness (THAT ws fun...) and found white wire with red stripe from fuse box to a junction in the harness just pulled out as it was corroded and broken. cleaned up and soldered up and everything works as advertised. $200 for the Traxter and a "$4000 fix" and my father in law seems to really like me now! Runs great!
