1st test ride on Nitrous DS
#1
Yesterday I went out to little Sahara UT to test out the new nitrous system I had installed. The system was purchased from a dealer from Nitrous Express(NX) and was fairly straight forward in it's installation. My first run was with the 25hp shot and about
300ft into the run ( up the valley side of sand Mtn) the engine completely shut down and was blowing black smoke
out the tail pipe. I decided to pull the nitrous jet out to see if something had obstructed the nitrous flow, sure
enough a small piece of teflon had plugged up the jet( I had used extreme care in applying teflon thread sealant)
Back at the hill I started up again and things were going fine about the first 700ft and then the enginge shut down with a huge backfire and I thought I heard my piston go thru the head. I cautiously restarted the quad and drove
back down the hill confused at what was happening, I tore out the fuel and nitrous lines checking for any blockage
and found nothing. Reinstalled everything purged the system and went back to the hill, by this time a dozen or so interested parties that
had found out what I was working on were waiting at the base of the hill where drag races had been going on all day.
Again I shot up the hill and about the same place the same thing happened. Now I was getting frustrated! I decided to head back to the truck and get some lunch and while I was there It dawned on me that some time ago I had a similar problem, and that was inadequate air flow into the fuel tank, which was causing a vacum effect and would restrict any fuel from flowing( very dangerous especially with N2O)so I cracked the gas lid a little and finally the thing ran and boy did it run. For those of you not familiar with our dunes, sand mountain is about 700 ft high and the valley run is almost 1/2 mile long so it's a good run. I ran against 6 other ds and a raptor and some 400's the first run and finished the run with the 2nd place bike approx. 2/3 the way up the hill.
Now for the banshees > about 30 or so quads are now at the bottom of the hill, among them are the shees that have been roasting everyone else all day. One guy on a fully chromed out extended swing arm nodded my way so I pulled up to the line and we were off- about 1/3 of the way up the hill I looked back and he was about 150 feet behind me so I ended the race there( gotta conserve the N2O) so now back at the bottom this guys buddy on another banshee running alcohol wants a piece of me. We lined up at the base and were off, I wheeled in first, second and third trying to reign the beast in and infact were so close to
each other that we rubbed tires , I lost him in the whoops at the bottom of the hill and ended the race about the the same place with him about 100ft behind me.
After that race he pulled up to me down at the bottom of the hill and said " what the he** you got in that thing , I've never been beat like that before".
Guys it was so much fun this nitrous is some awesome stuff-can't wait to go back and run the 35hp shot

Major, am down at the Sand Mtn. fairly often and would love to see that thing run. Lemme know when you are planning on going next and I'll try to get down there. I plan to buy a DS soon so I would love to see what they are capeable of. I would love to have the speed and power of my modified 'Shee in a nice 4 stroke package. Hell, my Raptor might be fun if I started sqeezing nitrous through it.

Majorecho, sounds awesome!! I would have had my install done this weekend, but on Saturday I broke the pipe tap for the foggers(1/16-27 NPT)I spent the rest of the day looking for this tap(no luck anywhere)have to order it. Even called my friend Sam,said he had one I said I would be right over.................but he was at the Sand Sport Supershow (bummer)Well any way got everything else done except some of the wiring, moved the battery up front the fit is real nice sits up and in front of the oil tank, and the bottle tucks under the seat nicely.I was warned about the teflon tape getting into the jets,I was carefull too......wonder if I can run compressed air(or something else) thru the system to ensure I have no obstructions in the lines?
Majorecho,I am planning a trip to Utah soon(Be visiting my father in law in Park city or St. George depends on which house he is at) maybe we can hookup,I would like to check out Utah's Sand Mtn.

the pipe is stock with a modified tip, I'm running the stock carb w/ K&N jet kit and K&N filter direct to carb. AS A WORD OF WARNING to anyone who might be thinking of going on nitrous- nitrous does not like rev limiters, the limiter retards the ignition and the nitrous continues packing and will either combust in the pipe or in the cylinder with the fury of hell when you shift -I suffered some detonation in the chamber and I need to replace the piston and pick up a no rev CDI before I can run
again I am also going with one step colder plugs to draw the heat out of the chamber better. I guess you live and you learn. I'm hooked on Nitrous!!!!
ps. I know that advancing the timing is not recomended on nitrous systems but I will be running atleast 100+ octane any time I race.
