weekend ride and question about oil
#1
Hey guys~
Well, I just got back from a long, wet weekend of riding. We went up to Sawyer county in WI if any of you are familiar with that area. If any of you ever go up to northern WI, I challenge you to try riding the entire Dead Horse Run! It is a 44 mile trail that you would be lucky to complete in 8 hours. It has more mud, water, and rocks than you would believe! We went about 2 miles up the trail and turned around just to see how bad it was, and about an hour later we were finally back to where we started! Anyway, I rode the DS, my buddy rode the 400 Scrambler, my dad rode the 400 Explorer, and another guy was on a 400 Explorer. We put on 225 miles in the 2 days of riding, 140 of which were in the rain. It rained all day Saturday, but we still managed to ride all the trails we had planned on. I was a little worried about taking the DS since I didn't have a clue how it did on gas, but I am very happy with how it did. I averaged 26 MPG for the whole trip, compared to 21 MPG for the 400 Explorers and 18 MPG for the Scrambler. I also had a GPS along which I recorded a top speed of 73.8 MPH on a flat gravel road. I know it still had a little left because I wasn't hitting the rev limiter like I have before. Overall, it was an excellent trip although it rained and I am even more happy with my DS now.
Here's my question~What kind of oil would you all recommend to use in my DS? I have roughly 500 miles on the machine and it is over due for its first oil change. I did a search and found some people were using Castrol GTX 20-W50. Is that just the regular motor oil that is like $1.39 a quart? Also, has anybody switched their radiator coolant to Dexecol coolant, the orange stuff? My dad is running it in all his machines, so I would like to use it also. Thanks in advance for any replies, and I am extremely happy to be part of the DS 650 family!
