MX DS650??????

MX is 90% rider and 10% machine. If I can smoke raptors and banshee's and R's and 400EX's around the track on my 300X then you can do good also. Mind you I can't smoke ALL of them, some people are better riders then I am. Just got out and have fun.

DS650Stage1 has a website with him doing some big jumps on the DS, so it can be done, The DS should handle all the other stuff on a MX track well, just the jumping might be "different" because of the extar weight

I think with the right tires, a-arms and shocks it could do quite well.
.....3TV's Custom Axis shocks sound pretty cool, it will be fun comparing them to my fine-tuned Works shocks in June. "Can fine tuned cheap compete with the high end" ... (And I still have a stocker back shock, might have to revalve it). Lots of sag, lots of travel, right amount of dampening, ZPG, it ain't rocket science, well it kind of is.
......Everybody's A-arms are a huge improvement over stock, +1,+1,Full set or just uppers, it all works great. Get some anyway. The Chrome Moly TimmyBoys save a bunch of weight too.
.....Man everybody sure seems to like those Ohtsu 20" rear tires, sounds good for MX, and what, 21" Holeshots in front?
.....Add a clamp-on K&N, CDI, a slip-on and jets.
.....A -1 TimmyBoy ChromeMoly SwingArm would be way cool and save like 8 lbs. for about $600 Might as well do the lighter 520 chain and sprocket while you're at it.
.....Strip every pound off, lose the fenders, headlight pod and bracket, front weight counts double 'cause that's where it needs to be lighter.
........Didn't one of the Magazines do a project quad like this? It was Blue. They were still not satisfied with the front end. They went with the +1,+1 A-arms. I wonder if just the uppers, or a full Chrome Moly adjustable set at stock dimension would have worked better. After all, a rail dragster keeps it's front end down by pushing the front wheels way out in front. Maybe the best way to lighten the front end is to shorten the swing arm and NOT lengthen the front.....
Sounds like fun.

In the Magazine article it was that they were trying to build the ultimate duner not MX'r and were trying to acheive the balance and handleing of the 400EX. All they acheived was moving the rear tires forward one inch and the front tires one inch. While cutting a bunch of weight and ended up with the same wieght distribution. I think they should have went for a longer swing arm not shorter for duning. Anyway's I was wondering if you (fourlix) have seen the thread I did about racing the whoops. Do you or 3TV have any suggestions on that? I was wondering where you both have aftermrket shocks and stuff if they make a big difference over the whoops and why that is. Are they softer or just respond to input faster or what? Maybe they are stiffer? I have never ridden a quad with fine aftermarket shocks so I dont have any idea as to what they really acheive. Dont have any around to even if I wanted to.
Thanks

i said it once and i'll say it again, its a big heavy POS, its junk, but i'm faster on my junk than most 250r riders. anyway the site is working and go to the xtrem garage forum and see pics and vids of the 110ft jump.

It's really rough out here where we ride. Mountain trails, lots of rocks.
It took about 5 seconds to figure out the stock shocks suck out here. I took them off and took the springs off. Compressing the shock by hand tells all. There is no nitrogen charge, which is not that big a deal, and the compression dampening is okay.
..... What is terribly wrong with the stock DS shocks is the excessive rebound dampening. A lot of rebound dampening is appropriate where there is a large unsprung wheel weight, like with a live axle. On the DS that is just wrong, as all A-arm suspensions are about as low an unsprung weight as you can get.
What happens, especially in repeated hits like rough terrain and whoops is the shock doesn't recover quickly enough, keeping it compressed and into the higher spring rates, making it a very stiff, rough ride.
Where StageIDS650 uses stock shocks for his mega jumps, there is time between hits for the stock shocks to recover.
.....Works or better shocks have a nitrogen charge, which keeps the oil from foaming, which might actually help the stock shocks. Rezzies keep the oil and gas separate, so the shocks never foam, and they increase cooling for harder longer use. The right spring rates, and right dampening rates are everything. Plus there is more money spent on quality components.
......What's the difference between $500 Works shocks and $1300 Elkas or Custom Axis? Hell if I know. Me and 3TV will chew on this one in June when we finally get to meet and ride together on the Paiute Trail and Sand Mountain.
