Hey all, i have a 2000 dunes 25ft toy hauler. Loaded with 2 quads, generator, even hauled a sand rail, also brought a foos ball table down to glamis last trip. Full 110 gallons of water. Stopped at the scales and it weighed 10,500 lbs. I tow it with a 2001 powerstroke crew cab and am getting 8-10mpg when going to sand mountain(all up and down hills) and getting 10-12mpg when going to glamis(mostly flat interstate 5) This is also not easy on the throttle, i could probably be light footed and get another 1-2mpg out of it. Usually going 65-75mph. Just got a lift kit put on the truck and it will actually help with the flat driving cuz the bigger tires made the gear ratio lower. I do not think the cummins are the best motors for towing heavy loads. My grandpa which lives right next to me has one and we use to use his all the time before we got our diesel. No way did it have the power the ford does and only got 8-10mpg at best. 25,000 miles on my 2001 ford, not a problem. Had a 360 v8 dodge 1500 before this too, talk about a gas hog, only got 5mpg towing the trailer. Sean

Wow, Durango pulling that large of a trailer and that much wieght in it. It's a little short coupled, toweee is longer than the tower, and weighs more.

I have to agree, that's alot for that little SUV. Not bagging on you, you just need to consider what he said. My Dodge Half ton was rated at 7,600 and with a 23' boat and trailer about 5,800 Lbs it was tough on it. The wind would sway it and had to keep alot of room between me and the next guy. Hard to do in Southern Ca.

Best tow truck I've seen is the Cummings in a Dually. The Banks Turbo helped alot. I think it was rated at 12,000 Lbs.

Good luck.

3tv, Thanks for the pricing info, I am going to be down in slc in a few weeks and if you could provide me with the dealer info.

I wont be buying for a while, but would like to go see them first hand in person. I have not had the chance and was not able to find a dealer locator for weekend warrior.

Thanks for the info, and by the way I have to agree that the durango is probably pushing the towing limit, I would be more worried about the brakes then anything else.

Take a look at my site, 36 foot pace american shadow Gt, triple axle. Loaded with 4 quads and all the gear, tools, compressor and everything else. weighs in at about 11 to 12k lbs. towing with a 99 ford crew cab PS gets right at 10mpg. The truck by itself is up to 16 and as I get more miles on it the mileage goes up. 47,000 miles on the truck so far.

I have a 97 12valve cummins and I know when I put my foot (3TV speeds) into it pulling my 5th wheel (8,0000lbs non toyhualer) my milage drops down to 9-10 but if I slow down it raises up to 12. The best unloaded I have got is 20 mpg and the that was driving in the Colorado mountains under 50 mph the whole drive. another alternative to Banks, is Diesel Dynamics out of Las Vegas. I was leaning towards Banks til I found them. I did a Stage 1 which made all the diffrence with the trailer in tow.

Yep, the Durango is about at it's limit on towing. My wife and I knew going into this we may need to get a new tow vehicle. The Durango does have a 5.9L engine though and a 3:73 rear end. It is rated to tow 7300 lbs. The trailer is about 5000 lbs. + quads at 1200 lbs. I will not fill up on water until I am a Fallon, NV (about 20 minutes from Sand Mt. and all straight level ground.) The Durango is built on a P/U frame (Dakota). If you ever ride in one, you will know this is true.

My problem is I have to use the car for everyday business use and a p/u is just too big. I would love a diesel in a Yukon / Expedition. The Durango actually has a longer wheel base than the Yukon. I am having a tough time justifing an upgrade to a Yukon with a 5300 engine and a 4:10 rear end for a max rating of 8100 lbs when I am really not gaining much over the Durango.

We did go with the 22' trailer because we didn't want the trailer wagging the dog. I will take it easy on a few trips and see how it does. I am not planning on going 75 while towing.

No problem, just a FYI from expierance.

I sold a 26' Mid Cabin boat to a guy with an Aerostar V-6. When he showed up to pick up the boat, I asked where his tow vechial was, He said this is it. The Aerostar was rated at maybe 4,000Lbs. The trailer wieghed 1,200 and the boat DRY was 4,800. It carried 25 Gallons of water and 75 Gallons of fuel so that's another 800-900 Lbs, plus all the Boat stuff, food, general needs of a boat. He had a load leveler hitch, and was all set to tow the thing home. He also lived about 50 Freeway miles from water. I offered to use my truck to get it home and he said no he'd take it. Well, we typed up a waiver, he hooked it up and off he went. I followed several cars back so he couldn't see me, due to the size of the boat. He made it home but you could tell it wasn't easy, his wife was very worried about the whole thing as well. I know he was well beyond the limits of that tow and I just can't in good faith allow him to continue towing with that.

I found in the auto trader a good condition '70 Ford F-350 with a 390CI motor for about $1,500 called him and he went and bought it. Save the Durango and buy a cheap heavy duty tow rig.

Just my thoughts, better safe than sorry.
