Electric fans.

Went riding today and for the second time my fans stopped working. Has anyone run across this problem too? what are some fixes for it to avoid it happening again? I will have to take my ds to the shop. Last time they said that the fan motor and relay box had to be replaced. Ever heard of this happening?

It happens! You can do one of two things. You can go to www.offwarehouse.com around $70.00 there. or you fix it yourself by removing the gas tank, and pulling the fan out. After you have the fan motor out, you will see that it is sealed. Next you take a flathead screwdriver and a knife and cut slowly, (without bending the metal plate)until the plate is off. Carefully remove the plate. There are four magnets that are very fragile. (In my case they all jumped on the metal plate and nearly broke, BE CAREFUL.) If you have to remove the magnets, be sure not to sit them near each other (or they will snap together and break). There are four bushings. One of the bushings will most likely be your problem. (In my case, the wire came un-welded from the bushing, and I soldered it back.) But if you need new bushings, I heard that you can get them from any person that works on washers and dryers, or electric motors.
Now for the hard part putting it back together. The four bushings you will have to hold back to put the plate back on. The four bushings are on springs. Wrap dental floss around each bushing, and pull them all at once. Then put the plate on. (The plate will try to jump because of the magnets, and you may have trouble keeping the magnets in place, (sorry I cannot remember exactly how I did it), so have a good grip. You should then put some sort of sealant around the metal plate, to protect it from water.

P.S. You could try to prevent this in the future by turning off your key, and not letting the fan run when the engine is not on, unless the engine is hot.

IMHO you do need the fan, My DS overheated @ Glamis about 6 weks ago due to the fan ! My 15 yr old (120 lbs) was riding it while out duning so it wasnt as if it was being abused. Bike wouldnt run for about 10 min. If it wasnt needed I doubt they would put a fan on it , especially here in AZ.. Again JMHO. For the record it was still under service so no idea how much it would have cost.

MichaelAZ thats a bummer sorry to hear this and im not telling you or any one else what to do but merely expressing my opion on the subject.my ds is severely pumped and has no problem.it is two years old and no fan and many other riders have thrown there fans away with good results.PS could you please explain to me the spoiler on my next door neighbors ford escort is for.LOL

The spoiler on the Escort will help keep the back end down as soon as the guy converts it to rear wheel drive and pops a V8 in it. Oh, wait, then the front end would drag. Never mind. I own an Escort, anyone who puts anything but the stock spoiler on there is, uhm, well, I think we all know.

My fan has been dead for about 8 months, not planning on replacing it. The fan only kicked on when idling for periods in hot weather, never ran while riding, it would just kick on once in a while after I stop, in hot weather, and never ran in winter at all.
Since it died, I've never had the red warning light come on, which is lit by a seperate temperature switch than the fan, so I figure I'm fine without it. If I ever go someplace much hotter than Indiana, and I get the red warning light to come on, then I will replace the fan.
The little fan is pretty tiny - you'd think if they wanted a fan on it, they'd put a fan on it - not some dinky little junk like that...
