Black Spark Plugs
#1
On my DS I have an exhaust and K&N filter, i just bought the jet kit and after looking at the spark plugs they were pure black. I ride at around 5000 ft. and was wondering what clip I should put the needle at, and what size main to use, any help would be appreciated!

I am at 6000' and run the needle on the third clip from the top and 185 main. These are dynojet numbers.
I am also running the k&n on the carb. If not running the carb mount, I would guess that you should be on the second clip position and about a 175-180.
If you could tell us more, like what exhaust, slip on or full system and what your current settings are, we could help more.

I have the filter in the stock airbox, and I have the White Bros. slip on, I have the 180 main in there now and the clip on the 2nd from the bottom, where do you thinking I should have it? I had checked the plugs before i did all this too so i haven't ridden it with the K&N and jet kit yet.

I would move the clip up one or two notches and see if that does the trick. I think the main is pretty close. But if the needle is on the second clip from the bottom that is why it is too rich. The jet kit should of had directions and their jetting recommendations are usually pretty close.

I agree with both DSWolf and Hightower. 180 sounds close and if the clip is on the 2nd from the bottom, your rich. Move it to the middle and retest but if your plugs are black, then 2 notches will mostly be needed to tune it in. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Welp here I go again. I am at the same altitude as Bat. I run 3rd pos. and a 170, with carb mount filter and full pipe. The best way to do your adjustments is to keep your plugs clean and put in the jets until you get it close, then adjust your mixture screw till its perfect. It takes alot of time and I recommend getting rid of the butter screws and get you some allen head screws, you'll need them. I think I have mine about perfect. One way I could tell that it was close was I would take my thumb and very fastly slip it on the throttle to blip it. I have an instant pop from it. When it was off it would be delayed or rev for a second. I have rode other DS's and even mine before I did the time and mine has about the best throttle response I have seen. Bat, no offense, yours is bad a$$ I am just refering to the throttle response. Now I just need to get some tires to get the power hooked up.
