Guys,
I went to the Honda shop for oil for my girls 400EX. While there I asked for spark plugs for a DS. All they had was NGK D8EA. Which is just like the stock plugs except that it is not a resistor. My owners manual has the stock one as DR8EA. Will that make any difference on a DS? I thought since I wasn't riding a quad with a radio I'd be OK, what do you think?

But I see BR8-ES as the stock one on the Bomberdier direct website! Anyone know whats up & what the differnce is?

Probably just a typo in your post but the stock plug is a DR8EA. The non-resistor plug D8EA will work just fine in its place. I'm supprised the dealer didn't have a DR8EA in stock- they're extremely popular. Maybe he was out of stock. I'm not sure why the engine makers put resistor plugs in off road engines, it doesn't make much sense to me. maybe someone else can shed some light on the subject.

thanks,
I'll just use these then.
The thing is what is the ES (as opposed to EA) plug on the Bombardier direct webpage?

You are supposed to use R plugs because of the electronic ignition, I have used non-resistor plugs before, and it ran fine.

Do you think any long term damage could result from using a non-resistor plug?

The B could not work as it's a 14MM plug and the DS requires a 12MM plug, and that's a D.

The R is for resistor, and I do recomend staying with the resistor plug. The avoidance of radio interferance can't be a bad thing, so I'd stay with it.

The 8 is the stock heat range, if the motor is stock, stay with that range.

The E means that it has a 19MM reach. That is a requirement for the plug to work.

The S is a standard, 2.6MM, electrode, while the A is a special design. The S should work, but the ignition was desgned for the A.

For what it's worth, the D8ES should be a less expencive plug, and it should work, but it's not ideal.

I personally use the DPR9EVX-9 in my motor. It's an Iridium Platinum, projector tip, wide gap plug, one heat range cooler to help with the higher compresion I run. It's also available in the stock heat range for stock motors, but they retail for about $7.50 each.
