V's - Skates or Edges?
#1
Has anyone tried both the Skat-Trak Edges and the STU Sand Skate IIs?
I was looking through a catalogue last night and noticed that you can get the Edges in a 22" tall 8 paddle. I'm still trying to decide what the hail I want. I just know that I don't want the Sand Sharks any longer. They are great fun sliding around on the dunes, but when it's time to put the spurs to it, they just want to break loose.
Any help or advise would be appreciated.
Thanks,
SD

I haven't tried them both, but I've talked to those that have. From what I hear, the eges have better stright line traction than the skates, the skates spin around easier like your sharks, but both are much better than sharks in striaght line traction. A friend of mine runs 20" 10 paddle edges, for even better striaght line traction, while still having the qualities of the vee.

I'm pretty sure HITOWER is speaking of me with the 10 paddle Edges on my Raptor and I can tell ya they hook up good... Almost too good! I believe if anything, I am SLIGHTY over paddled right now. I ran the straight blade Sand Devils before and still ran stock gearing and could pull wheelies in 4th gear. With the 10 paddle Edges I had to go down one tooth on the front sprocket just so I could pull those tires in my higher gear.
But I'm currently working on getting a few more ponies so that it won't be an issue.
SoonerDuner, I don't know what kind of quad you have but I do highly recommend the "V" blade. If you have a smaller cc bike I would go for the 8 paddle tho. I'm alot happier with the turning ability of them than the straight blade - because with the Raptor torque - all it would do is push me forward! Whole different ball game with the "V".

BOOMER!,
I have 20" 10 paddle edges, I really like the way they handle in the trails at LS, Also they hook up pretty-damn good in the drags too. Let me know the nexttime your going to LS, and I'll let you take my "RIG" for a spin. I will also say that I wish I had 22" tires sometimes, so maybe you will have both worlds if you get the Xtreme 22" edges.

Thanks guys... Hey Bigger, I think that we're shooting for a trip to LS this, or next weekend. I'll let you know what the verdict is (date) after some phone calls to the rest of the thugs LOL! BTW, all I've found on the 22" Edges is an 8 paddle. The taller tire would probably compensate for having less paddles, no??? I like the looks of the blades on the Edges. They look pretty aggressive. I've never owned a set of Skat-Traks and was wondering if the vulcanized paddles held up well. I'm not going to be spinning them on asphalt or anything, but we do ride some river bottoms and have to pass over some rocky terrain to get from point A to point B from time to time.
Thanks again,

Sooner, I have the Sand Skate II's and I love them. For whatits worth the forward traction is killer for a V. I was running 3psi all weekend at Sand Mtn, NV and hit rocks you name it and they hold up like no other. That is why I bought them was because I was told by MANY that they are indeed very tough, and that they are a very good match with the DS, now I know for myself that they are. The hook up is excellent. For what is done to my quad, meaning racing equall or even slightly more modified bikes, NO ONE could hang with me(4-stroke). I even beat a Raptor with HC piston and cams. My bike runs very well but if the tires werent good that would not be the case. I highly recommend them over the others, there is a reason why they are more I always beleive.

Hey Demon, Thanks for the info. and for complicating my decision even more LOL! I've heard good things about both of them. I know that either one would be better than the Spin Sharks that I have on there right now. I know the Sharks work great on other machines, but they just aren't a very good match for the DS. Kinda like the Dominators I guess.... If the hookup and performance is about the same for both the Skates & the Edge, I guess it comes down to weight and durability....
Where are the scales and sledge hammer when you need them!

Sooner, I believe the Sand Skate II or a VERY good tire aswell, I used to have them on a Banshee I owned, and was very pleased with them. I also think that they are a TOUGHER tire, The edge I have, seem to be looseing their V point quickly. To be honest, the deciding factor for me was that the Sand Skate's didn't match my Mohawks up front.
But I will say that that My next set of paddles will be 22".GOOD LUCK!
