GPS Hardwire

Thanks BlackHawk for the link to that website.
I purchased a 12v power cord off of ebay for my etrex. I was planning on just cutting off the cigarette plug portion and run the wires directly to the battery terminals with an inline fuse (2amp?) on the positive. The problem I see with that is that the etrex will be receiving 12v or more. Is that a problem? Does it need a voltage regulator? is it a part that I could buy at radio shack or an auto parts store and just wire it in line? The easiest would be to keep the power cord as is and install a female cigarette plug on the bike some where, But I would rather not do that because of the size of the connectors and the vulnerability to the elements. Any suggestions would be great!

Sandaholic,
Email me Administrator@DS650.net and I'll send you the pic of where I mounted a 12v power connector on my machine. It's not as nice as BlueLeaders, but it works fairly well for me. (If I'd been able to find a plug with a mount like his, I might have done something similar to that thought.) Since I forgot the step of 'adding an inline fuse' what size should I use, 1 or 2 amp? Everyone mentions this range, with nothing specific ever said.)

BlackHawk, I sent you an email. If you could please send me that picture to teplin@rohan.sdsu.edu or if you could just describe where you put the 12v female connector. I was think of putting in the are that the battery is located. Just worried it will be exposed to the elements

I had the same problem with a Garmin GPS. Turns out the batteries were squishing the springs down and they would not make contact. Spread the springs back out and it is fine. But being that the Garmin uses 4 batteries it will squish the springs again. The Magellan GPSs only use 2 batteries which is less weight on the springs.

I've got a Magellan 315--got it "free" using Holiday Inn Priority club points...whoo-hoo! I haven't had it very long so I can't give a good or bad review...anybody? I have yet to find a workable method for mounting it to my quad...I saw on an accessories sheet there is a mount kit for handlebars but no where I've been to carries the kit and even when I do find one I'm not so sure there's any room on my bars. I also hope to install a 12v outlet. Good thread!

Well my install is done, just have to test it out. I ended up running a 12v female cigarette plug to where the tool kit goes. From there I plugged in the garmin 12v plug and put heat shrink over the connection. I ran the cable along the frame and up the steering stem and to the handle bar. I realized you need to leave slack in the line for when the bars are turned.
