Out of curiosity, has anyone done this? I'm not talking about the dogs, syncros or blockers. I'm talking the meshed gears that transfer the power. I want to know what to expect down the line when I really start to mod the engine and crank out some ponies. How much would it cost to have the gears cryogenically treated if I have to?

I think you are in the wrong forum for transmission troubles (go to the Yamaha forum).

Lol. Im afraid the post would never leave the top there. I was at a machine shop yesterday to get my axle straightened and the guy there told me he has a friend with an 01 Raptor and he just blew up his second tranny. When I told him this was a common problem he was surprised. Its amazing how the internet now allows us to find common problems and how quickly. Just look at the Z400. 10 years ago you would have to wait 6 months to a year after the release of a machine to see dynos for the performance mods and hear about common problems like the axle. Now everyone and their mother knew just days after its release.

The 650 tranny gears are pretty strong!
But there are weak spots.
I have had problems with the second gear shifting fork(bending)this in turn causes the tranny to pop out of second gear, repeated use without changing the fork will round off the gear dogs(then they too need to be replaced)not cheap$$$$$
I have found that undercutting the stock gears then cryo treating is fairly reasonable. Also worn dogs can be reground cheaper then buying new gears, plus you get more undercut or backcut, wich in turn helps to stop it from popping out of gear under extreme load
Also the repacment shifting forks are now improved, stonger then the stock ones....Hmmmmmm So if you have your Ds apart put in the new forks, cheap insurance
I had my transmissions race cut by Murdoch Racing$181.00 and the Cryo treatment by kpcryo$78.00 includes all gears shafts, forks, drum.

The forks are around $40 bucks ea.
There are 3 of them.
Not sure when they updated the forks? I know my 2002 Baja bought in 2001 didn't have the new forks,or if any of the newer Bajs's or DS's have them yet

If I ever have to order a set, how could I tell if they are the new upgraded ones?
