First true ride at Glamis experience
#1
I took up an invite to ride the BIG sand box Glamis, with Angry Baja Boy and DS dude last weekend. These guys can really hall the mail to say the least. Trying to stay up with these guys was a pain in the arss, but more riding time and a few more mods might help! Some serious raptor, cannondale, and a few Banshees were getting spanked at olds hill by ABB and DSD untill DS dude had a NOS problem. Anyway a 15 tooth sprocket looks to be the hot ticket for small to medium size dunes. Stock Baja gearing seems like first gear is to low and slow and second gear is to fast for crossing constant dunes. An after market cdi is also going to get the job done. Also, if you get off the beaten path and think you don't need no stinking GPS or water think again you will. Had a great time.

How many teeth is the stock DS front sprocket. and would you have to add links to chain or any other mods for it. How hard is it to install.?? and where is the best price on one.
How was the wind at Glamis Saturday night.

Stock is 16 teeth. No chain mods needed, just an adjustment. It is very easy to change providing you have access to a 1/2" impact gun and socket. Best price I don't know, but Ron Wood has them.

So the advantage of a 15 tooth front sprocket would be for more power on starts in second gear. That would make first gear real low. Would you still use first gear very much except for slow crusing starts???

Exactly. You can avoid first gear altogether if you want. The main benefit to me is the change in gearing for second and third. For my riding style, duning in third with an occaisional drop down to second works well, so I spend most of the day in third and fourth gears. It also helps with hill shooting because the I can launch better from second and the rpm range seems to work better for China Wall and others.

Musthavefn, Im a little late but Just for Info, rockymountainatv has 14 thru 16 for 12.99. I run the 14 and have no complaints at all with that one. I do run 22" rears though in both sand and dirt so you will still be geared a little lower than me if your on 20" rears.

For 12.99 I'll try a 14 also. That should make it easier pop wheelies. With the 14 can you lift the front end with just the throttle or do you still have to pop the clutch. I also run the 22" rears

Musthavefn,
First and second are easy wheelie gears. Third takes some effort. More effort on hard pack then in the dunes though. I get way better hookup in the dunes with my haulers than I do on hard pack with the XCT's. But that, I would guess is normal. It's the dune season now so I will run the 14. But come Trail season I will go back to the 15 I think. I just started running the XCT's so I will have to experiment with that one.
