Water pump seals - grease (molykote 111) or Dow Corning 111
#1
Just so people know that the grease (molykote 111) for the water pump seals is the same as Dow Corning 111. I found a dealer using the internet for Dow Corning in my area and got a small bubble pack of the grease for $1.00 and it is more than enough to put lots on and inbetween the seals. Hope that helps because none of the dealers or hardware stores knew what molykote 111 was.

Molybdenum grease is also available at auto parts stores. It is sold as Moly grease, CV Joint grease, Brake Caliper Grease, or Extreme Pressure Grease but the containers are larger and they will cost more than a buck.

From what I can tell from the package and off the intrenet, molykote 111 and Dow Corning 111 is a clear silicone based greese and lubricant that is temperature and water resistant. I think Molybdenum is a black and graphite based greese and will not hold up to the water as well. The greese that was between the seals when I took it apart was a clear type silicone type greese. Hope that helps.

oops, my bad. I ASSumed that Molykote 111 was a moly based grease. I have used a product like you are refering to made by GE for the aerospace industry, not readily available. I am certainly no chemist but I will say that molybdenum grease sure holds up to water when you get it on your hands, that stuff won't come off without a solvent and a brush!

I think you are right. Either will work. I have used that moly greese before and it is tough to get off with anything. I think it just has to be really water proof and lubricant. Thanks,
