Default Wiring Question?

Ok, I have my gauges now and I need to know what wires to splice into. I tried splicing into the two coming from the switch, but the gauges were constantly lit Anyways I looked at the tach and from what I can see there is a red wire which comes out of it and turns into the tan-brown wire going to the switch and a black wire from the tach goes into other stuff and I also have my kill switch spliced into that wire. Common sense would tell me to splice the positive wire from the gauges into the red or brown wire from the tach to the switch and splice the ground wire into the black wire coming from the tach, so the gauges will only be on when the key is. Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm getting sick of cutting and splicing wires to no avail. Thanks

Sounds to me like you spliced into the wrong side of the key switch.
