Default Fine tuning the DS?

OK, I think I am going backwards. I changed the jets and messed with the needle. I tried a 185 and down to a 175. Tried the needle in all positions from top to bottom. It went from bad to very, very bad. I cant get it to even rev without backfiring through the carb. I thought I blew her off the intake a couple times. Now another problem has arose. The header is glowing red hot. I thought I was running rich. But doesnt a red header mean lean? I am lost. What is everybody running with a carb mount filter and slip on pipe? My elevation is something around 600-700 ft. Any help is appreciated!!

GO back to the 195.You may even try the 190 because of just running the slip on, but I would try the 195 first. Needle on 3rd clip(if dynojet needle) and put all the washers underneath the clip. Then go to about 3 turns out on the air screw and you should be really close. Let us know what happens.

02Baja,
Dude! I have a few questions that will help.
1) You never did say what elevation you ride at.
2) What gas do you run and is it fresh?
3) With the 195 main, with WIDE OPEN THROTTLE in 5th gear running around 4000 rpm and you let off to 3/4 throttle does it;
(A) pick up speed? If so, does it improve if you pull the choke or get worse.
(B) run normal with normal reduction in power.

4) while lugging 5th (around 300rpm) hold HALF THROTTLE, Does it;
(A) Surge, sputter and misfire and does it clear up some if you pull the choke out? OR
(B) load up and smoke, like it does if you leave the choke on? OR
(C) pick up speed normally?

5) when you start it hot will it idle by itself and did you have to turn in the idle stop in order to get it to idle?

Jetting by proxy is 100 times harder then doing it first hand. Answering the questions the best you can will help.

Mine was running good yesterday when I had it out for a little ride. Can't really ride much in my neighborhood. But it hasn't popped through the carb since I changed the washers around on the needle, so I think I am close. Thanx for all yur help!

Good to hear and happy to help. These things really wake up with those mods, now all you need is a CDI to get rid of the limiter and watch it fly.

The thing is, I had it dialed in pretty close I thought. It didnt start doing this until it got real cold. Then I put on the carb mount filter and it got 10 times worse. Do you think the valves could be doing this? I got your PM JSsDs. Thanks for the offer. I might take you up on it. I am going to dry what BajaDS650 did. JSsDs, to answer some of your questions...........

It does idle by itslef once hot. Dont have to turn anything to improve it
