I think the regular 03's have the same rev limit as the baja. Whether or not the connectors on the CDI are different is the question...

My baja cdi had the connector molded into the case for the cdi. There was no way to remove the connector. Look on your 03 and see if it is molded in, or if it has wires coming out to the connector.

It's no secret that it's a bad idea to rev a stock DS past 8300, but how do you make sure you don't if you've got a different CDI and no tach? Does the power drop off enough to make you want to shift before 8300 anyway?

Thats a good question bigben....because of factors like that I was thinking of getting the alba or graydon cdi because they do have a rev limit....it's over 9000 i think but at least it's there.
Bat - I'd check my cdi but i'm no where near my quad at the moment. Will look next time

Bigben - yes it does. power on stock motor begins to drop around 6700, and you know your out of juice when you hit 8000, tach or not. That's why the stocker kicks off at 7700 ('03 and on is 7900, including baja) - no real need for any higher rpm. Trouble is, the motor has so much torque it hits peak rpm quick, and even though you realize it right away and go to shift the rev limiter beats you to the punch. If the rev limiter kicks out the spark right as you go to shift in a drag, sometimes the motor stumble can cause you to miss the gear, and then you lose the race. Once you get the new cdi box, you easily recognize the need to shift around 8000 and keeping yourself from passing 8500 is really no problem.

My engine in my baja which is stock, except pipe, carb mount filter, jetted and cdi will pull pretty hard up to about 8500 rpm. At that point the power drops off.

Stock the rev limiter was not a problem, but with the pipe, filter and jetting the cdi became a huge problem.

I have revved mine up to about 9000 rpm with no ill side effects either.
