Default tips for removing gas tank

I'm wanting to check the valve clearance on my '03 ds. As I sit and ponder this task, I think that removing the gas tank might be messy. Anyone have tips for removing it? All the guides for doing a valve check I have found just say "remove the gas tank" and don't explain it.

Turn the pet-**** to off, unhook the fuel line from the carb. Take out the four bolts that hold it on and take it off. You will loose very minimal amounts of gas.

don't forget to take the nose plastic off, and besure to get your quad good and clean before you start to go into the top end there. there are sites in here that give you the valve clearance, but seems i remember it being between .004-.006, just checked the manual and that is what it is. when i put the woods cams in mine elliote told me to go .006-.008, hope this helps
