Default Spacer under the needle on the TM carb..

I just realized from the exploded view of the carb that there is a spacer under the needle. I have my needle on the 3rd clip with NO spacer.. SHOULD I have the spacer AND the 3rd clip?? or should I just move the needle to the 5th clip to copensate??
I have a few plastic and metal spacers from the stock carb.. can I use one of them? witch one? I cant tell how think the TM one is??
I have the TM42 carb...

The spacer serves two purposes. One its half as thick as the distance from needle clip notch to notch so you can take it out to move "half a notch". The other reason is its nylon and it keeps the clip from wearing away on the slide. I have ran many carbs without it though.
