Have 2000 DS, It's a hard starter. I heard to ajust the valves, Ordered a manual have'nt got it yeat. Can any buddy give me some help. The valves apear to be to tight. (I have only done XR valves before)

Does any buddy know of a cheap place to get shims? Man are my intake valves tight, I can't even get a .05 in there. To figure out shim size all I should do is add what I'am short to the underneath?

 

Does any buddy know someone that stocks them?

 

bmw motorcycles(cheapest),yamaha,kawasaki. they all should stock them. they are 29mm shimms.

Most dealers stock them because they are the same shim used in most bucket style engines. If they look them up on the microfish and dont have the bombardier ones, that dosent mean they dont have them. I got mine from a yamaha dealer.

You said a .05 won't fit? .05mm or .05"?

My intake woulden't allow a .0015" (.0381mm) and my exhaust was .008" (.203mm).
Rotax recomends .004" (.101mm) to .006" (.152mm)

When I got done I had .005" (.127mm) intake and exhaust.

I think the dealer over torqued the dog bone that holds the cams. So I would recomend that you remove the shims, measure the existing shims, re-install the same shims, and check the gap.

If you can find out what the gap is then it will be easier to calculate the size you need.

Example: if your intake gap is .002" (.0508mm) then you will need a smaller shim by .003" (.0762mm) to get a .005" (.127mm) gap. If your gap is .008" (.203mm) then you will ne a larger shim by .003" (.0762mm) to get a .005" (.127mm) gap.

Make sure you measure each shim with a micrometer that reads in .0001". I found that all the dealers had shims and if the shim was marked 2.45mm it was between .0935" (2.374mm) and .0985" (2.501mm).

Sorry if that was a little confusing, but I thought I would give you the inch and mm #'s

Good luck and remember to "NOT" overtorque the dog bone screws.

 

I heard from Ron Wood that the Kawasaki KZ1000 (cop bike) uses the same shims...as far as determining the thickness use a good micrometer...check with feeler and then figure what it will take to get to .004-.006 inches or .1-.15mm...I marked my shims with a sharpie permanent marker as the location it came from and took it to a BMW dealership...they measured the shims then took my clearance measurements and hooked me up with the right ones for around $2 a piece. The manual states that the engine should be cold, i.e.--max temperature 95F. This topic has been discussed extensively in here...a search will give you plenty to go on if you need more.
